Historia
Jonna Hiestand Mendez began her CIA career as a “contract wife” performing secretarial duties for the CIA as a convenience to her husband, a young officer stationed in Europe. She needed his permission to open a bank account or shut off the gas to their apartment. Yet Mendez had a talent for espionage, too, and she soon took on bigger and more significant roles at the Agency. She parlayed her interest in photography into an operational role overseas, an unlikely area for a woman in the CIA.

Well written, well performed. I highly recommend this book to anyone curious about the CIA, particularly its female operatives.

Historia
Koli never planned to set foot outside his small village. He knew that beyond its walls lay a fearsome landscape filled with choker trees, vicious beasts, and Shunned men. But when he was exiled, he had no choice but to journey out into this strange world where every moment is a fight for survival. And it's not just Koli's life that is threatened. Whole villages just like his are dying out. But Koli heard a story, once. A story about lost London, and the mysterious tech of the Old Times that may still be there.

Solid Book Two
Revisado: 04-24-24
I'm used to being underwhelmed by each subsequent book in a series, so the Trials has been a refreshing treat. All the verve and intimacy of the first book was, if anything, deeper and more delicious here.
I love the character growth and deceptively simple dialogue, but my favorite element has to be the genuine empathy the protagonist bears for his friends and his enemies. None of these people is a mere placeholder for him, and thus each character is a person to us as well.
I can't finish this review without praise for both readers, who have clearly done the preparatory work to tell this story as if it were their own. Not every audiobook flows like a river. This one does.

Historia
Six remarkable stories from a master of modern science fiction. Octavia E. Butler's classic "Bloodchild," winner of both the Nebula and Hugo awards, anchors this collection of incomparable stories and essays. "Bloodchild" is set on a distant planet where human children spend their lives preparing to become hosts for the offspring of the alien Tlic. Sometimes the procedure is harmless, but often it is not. Also included is the Hugo Award - winning "Speech Sounds," about a near future in which humans must adapt after an apocalyptic event robs them of their ability to speak.

Octavia blows me away again
Revisado: 03-15-21
Excellent narrator keeps you hooked on beautiful, deeply considered prose. I especially loved Blood child, the first story- it filled me, while I read, with a bone-aching horror I haven't savored in a long time. It's a bite like a strong cheese that makes you feel totally present for a lovely moment.
All of her stories make me think AND feel. I can't say that for most authors.

Helps me sleep and relax
Revisado: 02-07-21
I listen to this audiobook over and over to help me relax and fall asleep. Its target audience is teens and preteens, but I, an adult, find it very relatable and calming. The narrator has a wonderful grounding voice with no pretense; it's soothing, kind and guiding without an excess of dramatic feeling as I've heard in many other such recordings.

Historia
It’s been 120 years since the 50 or so worldships containing the few million survivors of the human species set off after the planet Earth was destroyed by a meteor. On the Worldship Humility, Sam, a 30-year-old Airlock Operative, is bored. Living in space should be exciting and full of adventure, except it isn’t, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters and holographic adverts outside the stores in the retail zone. Petty thief Yasmine Emile Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored....

Unbearable, obnoxious narrator sounds like he's mocking the story. I could not enjoy even one chapter.

Historia
The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. Sure, the life he's chosen isn't much of a challenge to someone with his unique gifts, but he's content with his quiet and peaceful existence. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Too awful to finish
Revisado: 08-24-16
Performance: The narrator spoke clearly. His male voices were mostly engaging and added to the storytelling. I wanted to slap the falsetto right out of him, though. If you can't do a convincing female voice, DON'T ruin the whole narrative with your sad, disruptive attempts.
Story: I forced myself through half of this book before I gave up on caring. The author wastes half the book on pointless details that don't enrich the story. The characters are painfully shallow; these are supposed to be some of the smartest people alive, but the plot and character development all revolves around high school dramatics. "This can't happen," says one egghead. "It's not possible!" "Well, it is happening so you're wrong," replies our sainted protagonist. Blech. That brings me to my favorite point- the protagonist is the third smartest person alive and has an eidetic memory with mythical abilities. He's just a high school teacher, by choice, but he's always the best, cleverest, most polite and well-adjusted guy in the room. If a 10th-grade outcast's delusions of grandeur sound like great reading, this is the book for you. Otherwise, steer clear.
