Disappointing!

The paperback version of this book has been one of my all time favorite reads! I really expected to enjoy this audible version, but the narrator’s tonal effects and pace override the content.
After two hours of trying to listen, I’m unable to finish this version of the book due to the mismatch of narration to the content.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Disappointing!
Revisado: 11-08-22
The reviews looked great and the sample sounded interesting. I suppose it was the opening lines of the book when Marcellus, the octopus, formally introduces himself in an accent I couldn’t quite place, that caused me to regret my purchase. Anthropomorphizing another species is so disrespectful to them and the reader.
There’s no one to whom I’d recommend this book.

Historia
Simone is trying her best not to think of what she’s lost. Diagnosed with MS, she awaits the results of another anxiety-inducing MRI. She’s just walked away from Connor, “a fixer” but possibly the love of her life. And nearing the holidays, the sights and sounds of winter in South Dakota only prick memories of better years gone by. Then, on a December morning at the university where she works, jarring gunshots pierce the halls. In a temporary safe place and terrified, Simone listens and pretends this will all be over soon.

Not for me
Revisado: 03-24-21
The title sounded interesting and the story began with an urgent attention grabbing event. Then the author leaves the listener hanging with few details as she moves to an earlier time and place.... and then another and then revisiting the first traumatic episode again with no resolution. There seems to be three separate stories that don’t quite weave into one cohesive story. I gave up.

Historia
I've done some stupid things in my time. I've been reckless. I've broken a few rules. But never before have I ruined so many lives or left such a trail of destruction behind me. As Max would be the first to admit, she's never been one for rules. They tend to happen to other people. But this time she's gone too far, and everyone is paying the price. Grounded until the end of time, how can she ever put things right?

Loved it!
Revisado: 05-15-16
I hadn't intended to "binge listen", but Jodi Taylor's fascinating (and fantastic) story telling combined with Zara Ramm's brilliant narration was such fun! It brings the listener right into the moment
I think this may be my favorite of the series. I look forward to more from this author!

I love the layering of stories that provide such richness and depth for understanding the fullness of the human experience as it is expressed within each of us.
