Disappointing. Drawn out. Like Marvin Jarvis as narrator.
Revisado: 03-28-25
Too long and it was obvious it was the children. Squeaky voice obviously not that of a serious kidnapper. Disappointing characters. Parents clueless. Not the strong and savy hero character that is usual in dick Francis stories.

Historia
When globe-hopping British First Secretary Peter Darwin returns to his childhood home for a visit, he is sorry. Waiting for him were long-hidden memories, a string of racehorse deaths and homicide. As Darwin begins to realize that the key to all of it involves his own past, he wishes he'd never come back, because he just might never leave again—alive.

Interesting Story Line
Revisado: 05-18-21
I enjoyed both the narrator and the plotting. The fact that Dr. Waters could read people and handle complex problems, a nice change from the usual detecting devices. I hiope Chris Knopf writes another book featuring Dr. Waters.

"But the thing is," said Horley, "they didn’t know each other at all. Never heard of each other. It wasn’t about the makers. Only about the works." On a dark winter's night in 1970, Horley and Grinstead huddle for warmth in the Senior Common Room of a college in Oxford. Conversation turns to the two impressive works of art that Horley has recently added to his collection....

Historia
A year ago a boy was found murdered at a girlsʼ boarding school, and the case was never solved. Detective Stephen Moran has been waiting for his chance to join Dublin’s Murder Squad when 16-year-old Holly Mackey arrives in his office with a photo of the boy with the caption: “I know who killed him". Stephen joins with Detective Antoinette Conway to reopen the case - beneath the watchful eye of Holly’s father, fellow detective Frank Mackey. The private underworld of teenage girls turns out to be more mysterious and more dangerous than the detectives imagined.

A look at teenagers in boarding schools
Revisado: 07-29-15
Would you listen to The Secret Place again? Why?
Perhaps. I have listened to it twice.
What did you like best about this story?
It was an education to me regarding teenagers, their language and angst about belonging and friendships.
Which scene was your favorite?
The very last one, when Holley goes to see Stephen.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
It was the right thing to do.
Any additional comments?
I like Tanya French's writing, but I am finding the books, very dark. I've like all the previous books, but the characters I like seem to get destroyed. I looked forward to seeing Steven Moran again, I had liked Scorcher Kennedy and previous characters but they get so beaten down. I don't really understand why Rebecca is still in school considering she confessed. I do like the fact that the MacKeys got back together. Looking forward to the next book.
