Classic well read
Revisado: 04-24-23
Jack does a phenomenal job showing the different natures of men and the differences on how each reacts in this adventure.
So much good theology is wrapped up in this story as well. Lewis always did a great job showing the nature of man and God rather than telling it.
It is written in a style that is slower than modern writing, but it allows for a more precise description. It does start slow, but ends quickly with a culmination that is very satisfying.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

Zelda + D&D doesn't make a very compelling story
Revisado: 06-18-20
Rips off Zelda so bad it's painful. The book tries a twist ending, but it feels so forced it hurts. also the additional D&D and litrpg elements really don't mix well. I think they could have, but not the way it was done.

12 trends thought of in new ways
Revisado: 06-09-16
I really liked this book. It introduced a lot of good ideas and brings a lot of new ways of looking at things, for example, have you ever thought of gross domestic mass? and how that number had been changing, and what that might mean? Kevin has and gives an interesting analysis in a small part of the book.
at times, the book felt to technical, but it moves pay it in every case.
I recommend it, our new world of 2046 will need need ways to think and see it, better start now.

Historia
To become a Dark Lord is no easy thing. The simple ambition to hold dominion over the world and bend all to your will sounds straightforward, but it's not. There are armies to raise, fortresses to build, heroes to defeat, and battles to be fought. After many spectacular failures, Evil decided to lend more than inspiration to these would-be tyrants. He wrote an easy-to-follow Dark Lord's Handbook. And yet the next Dark Lord that came along screwed up like all the others.

Very different from the first one
Revisado: 04-04-16
This was a very different book from Starship Mage #1. i personally liked the first one better, the this book does have a payoff in the end. Much more political intrigue, which does a lot of world building, but you also get to see what mages can do on the ground a lot more. I hope ther is a #3, there are a lot of interesting places this could go.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

pisses me off
Revisado: 12-29-14
look, this is a novel about a gay teenager and his former, crippled superhero dad. okay, i get that, its young adult too, so not many difficult words, fine, whatever, still looks like it has potential. but i loathe it when the author doesn't have the story telling grace to not go with the miracle ending. i'm trying not to spoil it, in case you like that kind of thing, but i actually liked the book until the last 5 pages, where this crud was pulled out and killed the story.
young adult has its own issues of simplification through vocabulary and dealing with teen angst, but i thought it was well done, even if the main character is a bit emo.
but i cannot overlook poor storytelling. a better ending would have been death than a miracle save in my opinion.
he does do a interesting parallel between the alien superhero and the main character that was thought provoking about who has responsibility for your outlook on whatever situation you are dealt with.

I missed the other captains in this book
Revisado: 05-18-14
What did you love best about Steadfast?
there was some good action and some new environments that we saw black jack in, but i felt ti played to his weakness, not his strength. the final battle was very good though.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Steadfast?
the final battle of the book was very good.
Any additional comments?
In this book, black jack spends a lot of time away from his fleet, or in a fragmented part of it, and it really made me miss the other captains and their interactions. you get some of this later in the book, but i really hope the next book has more fleet wide settings.
