The first short story collection I've listened to.
Revisado: 09-28-23
I enjoyed the stories in this collection, hopefully it doesn't set an unreasonable standard for any short story collections I read in the future.

Historia
Hero or villain. A choice that every Icon, a person born with powers, eventually has to make if they don’t want to live a life of mediocrity. For most Icons the decision is easy. Just do what your parents did. Then, there is Hunter Monroe. A powerful young Icon born from the unimaginable union of a hero and villain. Seventeen years later Hunter is seen as a half-breed abomination by some, and as a certified powerhouse by others. With his time at Purgatory Academy, the premier institute for Icons, coming to an end, Hunter must embark on a two year internship with a supergroup.

Not great.
Revisado: 12-15-22
The protagonist comes across as an unlikable entitled douchebag with money, cool powers, etc, that he never had to work for.
The worldbuilding feels like it's only skin deep, with some weird pseudo racism from supers against people without powers (called Voids by people with powers), and some eugenics stuff within the superhero community.
There is a strange dissonance where those themes are not presented in a good light, but almost every character tells us it's actually fine through their actions and dialogue. Like we're being told one thing and shown another. It's just not handled with the level of depth or nuance I'd have liked to see.
I'm possibly being a bit too hard on this book, as I just finished reading Worm a second time right before reading this one (wanted to read something a bit less dark as a palette cleanser before moving on to reading Ward a second time.), and that's a high bar to meet when comparing other entries in the superhero genre. It gets a little bit better in the last few chapters, but not enough for me to rate this as anything higher than 2 out of 5.

Historia
Long ago, men harnessed the Channels of Power, creating tevisrals: devices capable of manifesting magic. But men weren't the only ones to accomplish such feats. Dragons crafted the most sophisticated tevisrals. These shaped the world, defining civilization of man and elf alike. Over the centuries, the people of Kalda have fallen into a dark age, where elves are estranged from men and dragons have retreated into legend.

Mediocre libertarian comedy.
Revisado: 05-11-22
There were some funny moments, but too much of the humor was reliant on pop culture references that are already starting to seem a bit tacky and dated.
The political humor was low effort and repetitive. As a pinko commie socialist, I don't mind a bit of political comedy at my expense, but I'd want something that hits a bit harder than "gender studies dumb, sjw bad". The jabs at conservatives were of about the same quality.
I've enjoyed other books by this author, but this one missed the target for me.

Historia
Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total. On this dystopian Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands.

Adresses complex political themes while still delivering a good story with solid worldbuilding. The message was potent and honest without overshadowing the other elements.

Historia
This is your wake-up call to resist the Hustle culture and embrace the slowness of Jesus. Our culture makes constant demands of us: Do more. Accomplish more. Buy more. Post more. Be more. In following these demands, we have indeed become more: More anxious. More tired. More hurt. More depressed. More frantic. What we are doing isn't working! In a society where hustle is the expectation, busyness is the norm and information is king, we have forgotten the fundamentals that make us human, anchor our lives, and provide meaning.

Has Christian overtones, your milage may vary.
Revisado: 06-20-21
I agreed with the general message of the book, but as an agnostic (former atheist), a lot of the religious themes just didn't resonate with me. It's not a bad book, but I think that a person with a christian background would find the book more personally meaningful than I did.
