Every man, woman and child that’s interested in accumulating and retaining wealth should listen to this. The authors do a great job of discussing who has wealth and why, but also why others don’t have wealth. They also list some interesting pitfalls of parenting that lead to the children of the wealthy not becoming wealthy themselves, which I enjoyed.

Cal Newport is my kind of author: he doesn’t mince words and he doesn’t take long to get to the point. He uses stories but not repetitively. In Digital Minimalism, he argues for the right way to use technology, especially social media. This book is all about not being controlled by technology, but instead using it to serve us according to what’s most important to us. It’s all about being mindful and intentional. I really enjoyed it and will certainly put his practical advice into use!

I loved the message of this book and the logical arguments laid out by the author. However, it was not the easiest to get through. I almost completely stopped listening 2 or 3 times throughout the book because it felt so dry, even though I knew how revolutionary the message was. I recommend every read this, especially if you’re a worker, parent, employer, or teacher, but be prepared for a slow read at times.

Dr. Topol has written an extremely needed book about the state of our healthcare system and the digital changes on the horizon. My biggest complaint is that it started off pretty slow with the whole printing press & medical paternalism sections. I don’t think he needed nearly enough time to make those points, since most people already know them. The information at the end—when he got into the actual digital technologies themselves and their potential disruptive impact—was where he really shined. Well worth the read for anyone interested in the coming digital disruption to American medicine.

This book resonated with me so much. Like many Christians in America, I’ve felt a longing for something missing in the church for years. When you look at how we “do church” today, it’s obvious that it looks radically different from the NT. Francis Chan provided an excellent exhortation for us to examine our own hearts and return to full biblical faithfulness for our church gatherings.

He focused much more on building the case that something is wrong than he did on actually providing concrete solutions. This was intentional. He didn’t want us to replace our current model with a cookie cutter model of his own. He wants us to actually spend time alone with God, reading the Bible and seeking his will for our churches. So if you’re looking for specifics, you won’t find many here.

That being said, the last hour or so of the book was my favorite. That’s when he really dug into what to do. He shared an overview of what his church does, which is to have home churches of about 10-20 people, be missional, read the Bible together, etc. I enjoyed those details.

Overall, this book should at least be read and prayed through by every American Christian who cares about the mission of Christ and the health of the church. We’ve all known something’s been wrong for a long time. It’s time to seek God collectively and truly change the American model of church to a biblical one.
