Not A Lot Of Action, A Little Slower Than Usual
Revisado: 05-07-25
This book mostly happens in one location so it is not as action and adventure driven as the rest of the series. The first time I listened to it I thought it was kind of slow and not as interesting as usual. The second time I liked it a lot more. As Mrs. Pollifax's vacations are usually not at all restful, this is actually kind of a nice change of pace where she and Kadi are staying at the palace, which is now also a clinic/hospital, exploring a little bit of the town, and learning more about the changes Sami has or is trying to implement. I love the series so I'm probably rounding up my rating a little bit but I think it's warranted. There is no involvement from the CIA and Cyrus is not on the trip so you might miss that. The narration is excellent as always.

Historia
In this romance anthology, 15 Austenesque authors assemble to sketch Darcy's character through a series of reimaginings, set in the Regency through contemporary times - from faithful narratives to the fanciful. In The Darcy Monologues, the man himself reveals his intimate thoughts, his passionate dreams, and his journey to love - all told with a previously concealed wit and enduring charm.

Shockingly Terrible
Revisado: 04-26-25
I hate this so much I can't even finish it. It's bizarre because some of the stories start very strong, like there's an idea I'd love to hear followed through in a well written way, but the stories never live up to their potential. And one of the most confusing things about this audiobook is that the narration is utterly lacking. That's confusing because I have listened to several full length P&P variations with this narrator and he's usually good and funny and pleasant to listen to. None of that is happening here. It's like there's no life in any of his reading. I'm beyond disappointed in the entire thing. I wish I could return this title because it sucks.

Historia
Mr. George Knightley. According to Emma Woodhouse, you won’t see one in a hundred who is so clearly the gentleman. Respected by all, he’s kind, unpretentious, and scrupulously honest, with an air so remarkably good that it’s unfair to compare other men to him. We also know he’s been his “own master” from a young age. But Jane Austen tells us little more.

Don't Listen To This It Makes Mr. Knightley A Dolt
Revisado: 03-31-25
I don't know how to describe the uselessness of this book, and just how much you should strive to avoid it. It starts out okay. I mean, I don't think it's necessary to hear about any of our beloved character's childhoods or whatever, but it was mildly interesting and you might like that part. Then we move to Mr. K going to London and falling in love with like the first woman he sees for no other reason than that she is pretty and sings well, I guess? I don't know, I definitely could have done without this part. Then the book just gets worse and worse. I have no idea how an author can make Knightley seem like a dolt at best or sort of like a creepy creep at worst. It's weird and I am upset at how badly written this is. I'm mad that I didn't get a chance to listen to it while I still had a paid membership because I would have returned it as quickly as possible. It could be that a better narrator would have made it seem not quite as bad. The narrator isn't terrible, though he's bad at female voices, but his voice is more "serial killer thriller" than "Jane Austen leading man". There's also a weird minute near the end where Mr. Knightley is just going on about how his home is the most important thing, Donwell is all that matters, as long as he has Donwell he will be okay. I don't know how the author could have gotten the I guess I'll say essence of Mr. Knightley so completely wrong, saying things opposite to what he thinks, doing things he would never do, etc. It's bad. Please don't waste your time.

Absolutely Terrible
Revisado: 06-29-20
This is one of the worst books I have listened to in my entire life. I cannot believe the rave reviews it has here. If you told me this was written by a middle schooler, I would believe you. It is so, SO bad. It is hours too long, almost nothing happens, literally, in what is supposed to be a mystery type adventure type story, and the sex scenes were nauseating. Let me be clear - I listen to many types of genres, and sub genres, including romance with extremely explicit sexual encounters. I have no issue with sex. I DO have issue with terrible sex, sex that is more coercion than consensual, sex that is used as emotional blackmail, sex that is embarrassingly vanilla yet creepily possessive at the same time, and sex that is so boring and unbelievable that I will never be convinced that anyone other than a 7th grade boy wrote this. It is excruciating to listen to. The main couple is so immature, and their “relationship” is totally problematic and unhealthy. Not in a dark way you might enjoy, if that is your thing, but in a way that makes me sad and cringe and think this author has never had a healthy, mature and/or believable adult relationship. Like seriously, if the author is reading this: please seek out a licensed therapist to help you move past your adolescent ideas of what adult relationships can be. And to the people who love this book and author: please get the one month free trial of the audible escape romance package and listen to as many books as you can. You will find loving relationships, exciting plots, and steamy sex beyond what this absolute pile of crap is feeding you. Please, I beg of you. This book is not good.
