Excellent Narration

I wish I could say I enjoyed the story. I was too turned off by the wishy-washiness of one of the MCs. I listened to far more of this book than I normally would have because of the wonder narrators. The voice acting will make you want to return things you haven’t even stolen!

Loved It

This is one of my favorite books. The characters are well-written and believable.
When I heard Lori Prince would be narrating I couldn’t wait for it to come out. She did such an incredible job bringing these characters to life!
I can’t recommend this highly enough.

Too Freaking Depressing

The relentless self-denigration by the MC never ends! I was ready to slit my mental wrists by the end of the book. I kept reading because I thought I’d find a way to like her.
I obviously need to pay more attention when I see “dark fantasy” in a book’s description. I find nothing entertaining about child abuse/neglect, or controlling men. I especially hated seeing male characters who force their will on women, mentally or physically, while said woman fights her attraction for this behavior.
The author is a gifted writer and I’ll continue to look for different kinds of stories by her. Meanwhile, I have to go wash out my brain.

Strong Female Characters

I love the writing, story, and narration. And dragons. You gotta love dragons, especially cranky ones who don’t suffer fools.
Here’s the big question: how long do I have to wait for the next book in the series?

A Good Read

I love a good mystery and this one has all the right elements. Characters I liked, some I didn’t, and plausible red herrings. Did I mention good writing? Yesssss!

Too much anger & angst

I made it to Chapter 7 and had to bail. The anger is over the top and out of proportion for the entire situation. I read to be entertained, not irritated at all the characters.

The dialogue is sooo formal and stilted - yes, in keeping with the late 1800s, but an absolute boat anchor for pacing. The last two hours of the book finally caught and held my attention. Barely.
I liked the premise of the book. Maybe I’m just not a fan of historical fiction.

Fell Flat

I listened to the entire book out of loyalty to my fav narrator. I had a hard time buying the character Sierra and her meteoric rise in her job. I wanted to like this but given Jordan’s constant fixation on their age difference I just didn’t believe she’d give this relationship a try.
