unpleasant
Revisado: 09-03-22
I've liked every other book in this series, but in my view this story has few redeeming qualities. Annoying characters, story that wasn't very engaging. i gave it 5 hours, and just couldn't do a minute more.

torture scenes too much for me
Revisado: 09-09-20
I love a great mystery novel, and procedural mystery novels. I believe I can handle a lot when it comes to gritty. However, the cast approach and the prolonged torture scenes really spoiled it for me. Otherwise, well done story and performance if you have the stomach for it.

Historia
London, 1885. In a city of fog and darkness, the notorious thief Edward Shade exists only as a ghost, a fabled con, a thief of other men's futures - a man of smoke. William Pinkerton is already famous, the son of a brutal detective, when he descends into the underworld of Victorian London in pursuit of a new lead. His father died without ever tracing Shade; William, still reeling from his loss, is determined to drag the thief out of the shadows. What follows is a fog-enshrouded hunt through sewers, opium dens, drawing rooms, and seance halls.

Revisado: 01-10-20
I was excited to find this audiobook as it is my favourite genre. However, after 7 chapters I had to stop. Not enough story to keep me engaged. The writing was good, as was the narration.

Historia
Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters. A man shoots a woman execution style on a crowded sidewalk, then turns the gun on himself. Even with Decker's extraordinary powers of observation and deduction, the killing is baffling. Decker and his team can find absolutely no connection between the shooter - a family man with a successful consulting business - and his victim, a schoolteacher.

Revisado: 02-03-19
Interesting premise and I have listened to the previous books, but...this was corny, and the partner behaves and sounds immature, tedious and whiny. I just couldn't finish it.

Historia
Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose meets Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho. This brilliant historical epic is inspired by the true story of a man whose crimes were so great he was thought to be a werewolf. In 1563 Paulus Melchior, lawyer, academic and enlightened rationalist, travels with his young assistant Willy Lessinger to the isolated German town of Bideburg where local landowner, Peter Stumpf, is accused of brutally murdering dozens of people.

Revisado: 08-13-17
Yes, reminiscent of Name of the Rose, but original in its own right. Literary. Troubling in its unflinching historical accuracy (or at least, highly persuasive) of the time of the Inquisition. Beautifully written and narrated. A brooding psychological thriller. I could not put it down despite some tough spots, but I like to imagine what prior times were like.
Not for readers who want quick and frequent action. If you are squeamish I would recommend the written version instead, as the narrator's brilliant performance heightened every nuance. Well worth the time and credit. Under-valued in my opinion.

a lot of violence towards women
Revisado: 10-01-16
I really enjoyed this book for the narrator's skill and the writer's talent. However, I almost stopped listening because of the detail of psychological abuse towards the killer's adult female victims. If this isn't too off-putting for you, it is otherwise an excellently written book by a master writer. And there simply aren't enough French language books of this quality to pass up. Lionel Bourguet does a terrific job with all characters, including the women (a rare skill).

Dirt, soil, call it what you want - it's everywhere we go. It is the root of our existence, supporting our feet, our farms, our cities. This fascinating yet disquieting book finds, however, that we are running out of dirt, and it's no laughing matter. An engaging natural and cultural history of soil that sweeps from ancient civilizations to modern times, Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations explores the compelling idea that we are - and have long been - using up Earth's soil.

Brilliant discussion about a topic vital to our collective survival, and very accessible and easy to listen to, despite the esoteric focus and rather modest title.
Highly recommended to anyone interested in culture, history, biological sciences, farming practices throughout the world, sustainable or restorative farming, gardening, or any aspect of environmental protection.
Loved it.

For all lovers of animals--even the most sensitive
Revisado: 05-01-16
As with many animal lovers out there, I was ambivalent about purchasing this book, fearing a litany of disturbing and horrifying stories. I took the chance and have no regrets at all.
This book is expertly written and in a style very easy to listen to, and while his love of animals shines through, it is a rational 'position paper' using the latest research findings and worldwide events as examples, and covering a very road range of issues pertaining to our sharing the planet, and our lives, with all types of animals.
Excellent also for those with interests in economics of doing the right thing--shows that individual decisions in purchasing, and social media, can and do make a difference, and also better equips the reader to respond to statements by some that it is too expensive or hopeless to do the right thing.
Couldn't put it down. Kudos to the author.

sexist clichés +++
Revisado: 05-01-16
While I enjoy this type of story, I do not care for those that portray women as hysterical, dependent, weak, and irrational (i.e., needing a macho rescue). There are many such stories out there portraying women and men fighting as equals, side by side. To be fair however, I gave up after a couple of chapters of this, finding it too stereotypical.

Check out this brief but excellently written and performed story--original and well researched, with insightful portrayal of human nature. Performed with tension-building restraint by GT. Strongly recommended as far above the quality often seen in stories of this length.
