Historia
Félicité despises the Spanish and their mercenaries who march into New Orleans to subdue the French Creoles revolting against Louisiana's transfer to Spain. Still, she is not foolish enough to insult them. It's her adoptive brother Valcour who does that, though she gets the blame. Because of it, and in a desperate bid to prevent the execution of her father for treason, she becomes the mistress of ruthless Irish privateer and Spanish officer, Lt. Colonel Morgan McCormack.

Didn't like narrator, reading book instead
Revisado: 05-07-18
Although I didn't find the overall narration as bad as some did, I didn't like the effeminate weirdly voiced characterization of the hero. I know she was going for an Irish lilt, but it didn't work and ended up making him sound too much like a pansy.
So I'll read the book instead.

Historia
After her foray into murder investigation, Lady Kiera Darby must journey to Edinburgh with her family so that her pregnant sister can be close to proper medical care. But the city is full of many things Kiera isn't quite ready to face: the society ladies keen on judging her, her fellow investigator (and romantic entanglement) Sebastian Gage, and ultimately, another deadly mystery.

Great story, so-so narration
Revisado: 09-06-16
I really like this series but I SO wish the author or her agent had selected a better narrator. There is a lot of first-person narration by Lady Darby and this is when the narrator is most annoying and monotonous. The dialog portions are not as bad since she does vary the voices.

Historia
Following the death of her husband, Lady Darby has taken refuge at her sister's estate, finding solace in her passion for painting. But when one of the house guests is murdered, her brother-in-law asks her to aid the insufferable Sebastian Gage - a fellow guest with some experience as an inquiry agent. While Gage is clearly more competent than she first assumed, Kiera isn't about to let her guard down, as accusations and rumors swirl.

Loved story, tolerated narrator
Revisado: 08-07-16
STORY: The story is excellent. I rounded up from 4.5 stars for the story because it was not only fresh, but mostly well-reasoned. I liked the romantic undertones. The 1/2 star off comes from a bit of frustration that Keira decided to be so foolishly reckless at end. There were a couple of times that Gage irritated me too, but I admit that I don't have as good of information about his motives and history. The story definitely makes you interested in future books in series.
NARRATOR: it took me awhile to get over my irritation with the narrator. She doesn't have dramatic changes in her voice for different characters and she often sounds like she's reading a run-on sentence. The story became interesting enough to overlook these things for the most part. However once in awhile her lack of inflections made me have to decipher what she was saying because the sentences seem to run together. I've read other reviews of Wilds narration of other books and they say she does better in other stories. I hope she's better in future books of this series.
