Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

Grow Up, Ken
Revisado: 09-24-20
Grow Up, Ken
Overall, this book is entertaining, albeit formulaic. But Ken's insistence on inserting violent and pornographic scenes is adolescent at best.
I was left with a bad taste after finishing it. What the purpose is of adding vivid scenes of rape, torture and infanticide is hard to understand. Excitement? These scenes add nothing to the storyline except misogynistic titillation. There are more mature ways of adding excitement to a narrative.

This monumental book tells the enthralling story of one of the greatest accomplishments in our nation's history, the building of what was then the longest suspension bridge in the world. The Brooklyn Bridge rose out of the expansive era following the Civil War, when Americans believed all things were possible.

More Than a Story About a Bridge
Revisado: 08-16-17
This book is extraordinary. Yes, it tells about the building of one of the great marvels of engineering, perhaps of all modern history, th Brooklyn Bridge. But this story is interwoven with and enriched by a fascinating aubiographical history of the remarkable men who designed and constructed this amazing bridge; coupled with an in depth narrative history of the political, cultural and sociological history of New York, Brookly, New Jersey, Pensylvania and the United States, from early in the 1800's through the end of the 19th century. All in all, one of the best books of recent years, we'll written and well performed.

Historia
Pino Lella wants nothing to do with the war or the Nazis. He's a normal Italian teenager - obsessed with music, food, and girls - but his days of innocence are numbered. When his family home in Milan is destroyed by Allied bombs, Pino joins an underground railroad helping Jews escape over the Alps, and falls for Anna, a beautiful widow six years his senior. In an attempt to protect him, Pino's parents force him to enlist as a German soldier - a move they think will keep him out of combat.

Amazing Story, And It's True
Revisado: 05-23-17
This is the story of a young Italian man, who was in his late teens during the last 3 years of WWII, and it is amazing,, even more so because it is a true story. This is a story of a man following his faith and serving in the Catholic underground railroad guiding Jewish refuges from Fascist Milan through the dangerous Alps passes to Switzerland. It's also a love story as he meets the love of his life in the midst of war, while he is also serving the Allies as a spy, working within the highest levels of the German High Command in Italy. Performed very well, this is an exciting and engaging book that it is a pleasure to highly recommemd.

Historia
The final work in this series begins in December of 1862. Four months before, the Union Army tasted long-awaited victory at the bloody battle of Antietam. Grant continued on towards Vicksburg, Mississippi. The grim battles that lay ahead would be costly: the Vicksburg campaign, Chattanooga, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Atlanta and the March to the Sea, the siege of Petersburg. There would be two and a half more years of war before Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.

FANTASTIC
Revisado: 04-27-17
This is the third and final volume of Catton's narrative history of the American Civil War, and it is as fantastic as the first two volumes. Catton weaves a rich fabric of military, political and cultural facts and insights, drawing on a wide variety of records, documents, reports and other writings left by the War's participants and contemporaries, to present an insightful and highly engaging picture of the war and the United States and the American people that were so violently transformed by it .

Great Narrative History -Production not so Good
Revisado: 03-27-17
This is the second volume of the three volume civil war narrative history. Catton's work is outstanding. The technical production feels like the editors stopped at the rough cut. the long silent gaps and pauses between sections and some chapters and parts are distracting and verging toward annoying, diminishing the overall enjoyment.

FASCINATING
Revisado: 02-11-17
This is the first off three a three volume narrative history of the American Civil War, covering the Antebellum years trough the opening battle at Manassas Junction, VA, along the banks of Bull Run. Catton provides details and invaluable insights into the politics, economics, passions, sociological and cultural factors and, importantly, the people that came together to bring about the bloody devision and rebirth of the United States that still resonates and helps shape the US today. This series is comparable to, and in the same class of excellence as the like series by Shelby Foote and James McPherson. Highly recommended for any serious student of Civil Was history.

Historia
In the quiet of twilight, on an early autumn day, 26-year-old Elisa Vandersteel is killed while riding her bicycle along the Charles River. It appears she was struck by lightning - except the weather is perfectly clear, with not a cloud in sight. Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the Cambridge Forensic Center's director and chief, decides at the scene that this is no accidental act of God. Her investigation becomes complicated when she begins receiving a flurry of bizarre poems from an anonymous cyberbully who calls himself Tailend Charlie.

Below Average for Scarpetta
Revisado: 12-04-16
Chaos is not quite up to par compared to prior Scarpetta books. The story is a bit thinner than most, with many sub-plots that seem to wander around at length, but end up unresolved and go nowhere; until the end of the book, when everything is explained quickly, somewhat simplistically and summarily. Also, the loop-backs to prior books and prior events in this book were unduly detailed, and descriptions of scenes and places seemed distracting, overdone, hyper-detailed and contained many unnecessary or irrelevant material that added little. Kay needs a new storyline and under lying plot to freshen this series.

Historia
We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity and impartiality are the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the orderly and efficient flow of justice. But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe? It’s rare, but it happens. Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct.

this was a good novel and fairly typical of moss of Gresham's stories, which unfold with a predictable pattern. It was a little slow in the middle, but was still a good read overall. Recommended for light fun way to pass time.

Historia
This volume is dominated by the almost continual confrontation of great armies. For the fourth time, the Army of the Potomac (now under the control of Burnside) attempts to take Richmond, resulting in the bloodbath at Fredericksburg. Then Joe Hooker tries again, only to be repulsed at Chancellorsville as Stonewall Jackson turns his flank, a bitter victory for the South, paid for by the death of Lee's foremost lieutenant.

Shelby Foote is a world class storyteller and tells this story, the story of the transformational event in US history, the Civil War, in a wonderfully comprehensive and uniquely personable way. I highly recommend all three volumes of this treasure.
