Historia
In spring 1936, the Holy Land erupted in a rebellion that targeted both the local Jewish community and the British Mandate authorities. The Great Arab Revolt would last three years, cost thousands of lives, and cast the trajectory for the Middle East conflict. The revolt was the crucible in which Palestinian identity coalesced, uniting all in a single struggle for independence. Yet the rebellion would ultimately turn on itself. British forces' aggressive counterinsurgency took care of the rest, finally quashing the uprising on the eve of World War II.

Historia
Mr. Mani is a deeply affecting six-generation family saga, extending from 19th-century Greece and Poland to British-occupied Palestine to German-occupied Crete and ultimately to modern Israel. The narrative moves through time and is told in five conversations about the Mani family. It ends in Athens in 1848 with Avraham Mani's powerful tale about the death of his young son in Jerusalem. A profoundly human novel, rich in drama, irony, and wit.

Audible Version Hard To Follow
Revisado: 02-05-24
The first reader has a horribly high pitched voice which got on my nerves. The main story was hard to stay focused on - maybe because all the stories are told in a unilateral conversation, which also was hard on my nerves. So this audio version was not a pleasure to listen to. I had to go online to research what this book was supposed to be about. I think the text version would be a better option.

Historia
In Oscar Wars, Michael Schulman chronicles the remarkable, sprawling history of the Academy Awards and the personal dramas—some iconic, others never-before-revealed—that have played out on the stage and off camera. Unlike other books on the subject, each chapter takes a deep dive into a particular year, conflict, or even category that tells a larger story of cultural change, from Louis B. Mayer to Moonlight. Schulman examines how the red carpet runs through contested turf, and the victors aren't always as clear as the names drawn from envelopes.

Jammed pack with interesting stories of how Hollywood works or doesn't. Fun and fascinating. The US has always been the land of messes, but it is home.

Historia
This kaleidoscopic book covers almost 3,000 years of Arab history and shines a light on the footloose Arab peoples and tribes who conquered lands and disseminated their language and culture over vast distances. Tracing this process to the origins of the Arabic language, rather than the advent of Islam, Tim Mackintosh-Smith begins his narrative more than a thousand years before Muhammad and focuses on how Arabic, both spoken and written, has functioned as a vital source of shared cultural identity over the millennia.

Massive Historical Analysis
Revisado: 03-27-23
I liked all the detail in the book, but it was overwhelming at the same time - probably not the easiest book to digest in audio format because there are many terms and names that an English speaker is not likely to be accustomed to. Overall, sad to say, the book ends on a depressing note as he describes the state of the Arab speaking world in post modernity. I pray for the complex Arab world to find its way to success and peace without resorting to Arab on Arab violence or hatred for the 'other'.

Historia
Since The Karate Kid first crane-kicked its way into the pop culture stratosphere in June 1984, there hasn’t been a week Ralph Macchio hasn’t heard friendly shouts of “Wax on, wax off” or “Sweep the leg!” Now, with Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso in the number one ranked Netflix show Cobra Kai, he is finally ready to look back at this classic movie and give the fans something they’ve long craved.

Homerun for Fun
Revisado: 11-07-22
This book is fun, especially the chapter on Pat Morita or Ralph Macchio's candid self-revelations throughout the work. My wife and I "missed" most of pop culture in the 1980s due to being in college and having children. But we did partake of The Karate Kid, which was a mega hit for us. Fast forward to 2020s and Kobra Kai. We binge watch it on DVD and don't waste time with Netflix or streaming services of any kind; probably when DVDs are no longer for sale in the stores will we be forced to adopt streaming. Anyway, Kobra Kai is fun to watch except for the runaway foul language, which detracts from the great storytelling - and will keep me from letting my grandkids watch it with me. I listened to the audio book with great pleasure - a homerun for fun.
