Bono the mystic poet

Full disclosure: I have felt a connection with U2’s work since I was a preteen sitting in my room one night, listening to what our radio station called the “British Invasion” and I heard a song called “New Year’s Day” — the first U2 song I heard. Not too long after that I heard Gloria and I honestly thought it was a song about a woman named “Gloria.” It’s been a wonderful lifetime journey for me to experience and understand the true are deeper meanings of the U2 oeuvre.As I suspected, he describes a similar spiritual wanderings and deep desires as I have. I must also admit that he is my cosmic twin, as we share the same birthday, so I’ve always felt a kind of a kindred spirit with a man I’ve never met but I’ve followed for forty years and seen live over a half a dozen times through various stages of my life. The first time I saw them was the Zoo TV tour in 1993 and the last time I saw them was in 2015 of the innocence and experience tour. I stood “in the round”in Vancouver in 2009 with my new bride,with our first baby in utero, only to be lost a few weeks later. I’ll never forget looking across that dimly lot arena into the eyes of my pregnant wife as we were about to experience U2 live in Vancouver. U2’s music has inspired me to feel deeper and more profoundly. Many of their songs are anthemic to my generation and survive the test of time. Bono’s narration in this book is like a friend having a conversation with you over a glass of whiskey, with records playing in the background, as he tells the history of this band and all the amazing things they’ve accomplished because they believed in their dreams and acted on them. He literally has change the world and affected many millions of people on the continent of Africa, due to his generosity, concern, and action. And although I don’t agree with his politics 100%, I do agree with his intent, his good heart, and his desire to make the world a better place, and I applaud him for that. This book is best consumed with the audible experience, My hat is off to the producers, who infuse this audible book with wonderful music and background ambiance that make the narrative come to life.

Vital information for times like these

This is a beautiful work by John Eldredge to courage Christians to live with resilience and purpose in these trying and troubling times coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic. Like the author says, we haven’t even begun to reap the consequences of these last couple of years of isolation and division. He offers many encounters and exercises of spiritual disciplines to reset our daily routine to center around person of Jesus, and to help Christians put their value and energy, to gain wisdom strength from their relationships with Jesus Christ. He offers a lot of encounters and exercises, which are also described in his book “Get your life back” in his seemingly purposeful attack on our addiction to technology, and the fact that many the people have their faces shoved in a screen 90% of their waking hours and having a real relationship and real conversation is very difficult. He is encouraging us to do better as the people, as children of God.

Fun listening to Mr McConaughey detail many stories of his youth and career that forged him into the person he is today. I left this book as more of a fan of the man, not just the movie star. Heartfelt and honest.
