Painful, funny, honest.
Revisado: 12-21-24
Loved the characters. The surprise twist at the end makes it all worth it. It felt like a really good movie I didn’t want to end. An amazingly honest look at how relationships can enhance you and also trap you in ways that you can’t imagine, until it’s too late and hearts get broken. I was praying for a happy ending and I got something better. The truth.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Set in the London of the 1660s and of the early 21st century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city, and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. As the novel opens, Helen has been summoned by a former student to view a cache of 17th-century Jewish documents newly discovered in his home during a renovation.

Deep dive
Revisado: 06-18-20
Get ready to lose yourself in these characters.
I savored every chapter. A vivid capture of 2 world I thought I had nothing in common with. In the end, I didn’t want it to end, I kept putting off listening to the conclusion, ( which still had a surprise!)
The narrator did a good job given the variety of genders and accents she had to juggle.
Enjoy this deep dive into the history and impact of love and loss.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Good story
Revisado: 10-11-18
The story unfolds in a clever way.... seeming to be a feminist lecture using the narrative as a framework for illustrating a series of destructive relationships. But through clever twists, it reveals a lot more about the spectrum of complicated love affairs and the nature of secrets.
I was not in love with the narration, very staged and , frankly, badly “acted”.
But still worth it.

Historia
Mary B. Addison killed a baby. Allegedly. She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: a white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary, and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

Crazy twisted ending! I loved it.

Historia
Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

I love dogs, but......
Revisado: 03-02-17
I liked the story being told from the person of the "dog"... or on this case, a few dogs. The story was tragic and heartwarming as was expected. I am usually a softy when it comes to sentimental stories, but I couldn't get too worked up about this one, the storyline was way too predictable. Although it is a nice fantasy... our doggie angels reappearing to guide us with undying devotion. I guess I'm too jaded to get sucked into that, I was

What a performance!
Revisado: 02-01-17
I haven't enjoyed an audio book this much in a long time.
Characters were well defined and complex. Dialog was amazing!
Chapters rolled by like an action movie with a plot that got richer and deeper as you bounced back and forth from past to present tense.
The best was the narrator. I looked for more books read by him but found few.... DAMN! I guess I will have to check back and see what he does in the future . His voice was smart and funny... exactly what the story demanded.
I'm sure this will be sold as a movie script. I'm glad I got to read it first. The book is always better....

Predictable
Revisado: 09-23-16
The characters were well defined, but the story was a predictable "good guy/bad guy" narrative.
Chewing gum for the brain. No complex issues here. A very black and white world. Call me jaded, but I'm not shocked by domestic abuse anymore.
This seemed like shallow entertainment, I appreciate more realistic stories than obvious outcomes.
On a positive note, the book was a quick read. The narrator did a good job.
