Not at all sleep inducing
Revisado: 12-29-18
This is more a dramatic reading than it is soothing storytelling. The narrators’ voice changes for new characters and their expressive exclamations with shouts at varying volumes do not make for relaxing listening at all. I found it far more jarring than relaxing.

Far-fetched but not how you think
Revisado: 08-07-18
Ok, so we know there’s an evil child. There may be a possession. There’s mention of a witch. Perfect so far; I am in.
I won’t give anything away but after the mother gets a whole host of crazy unloaded on her, she sends her one source of safety away to buy champagne and strawberries. And THAT is where my suspension of disbelief ends. Not to mention that the author drops an entire plot line so we never find out what that really meant. I only finished it because the narration is excellent and my commute is long.

Painful. Necessary.
Revisado: 06-13-18
It’s not going to be all unicorns and rainbows, to paraphrase Mel, but listening to this shows there’s always hope to problems that can seem insurmountable. I am better for having listened. I am humbled by the people who shared their story. I am in awe by Mel’s insightfulness to each individual’s story but also her practical takeaways that can apply more broadly. This is humanity at its best.

Historia
Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them? Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother.

Inconsistent volume
Revisado: 03-21-16
I honestly couldn't get too far in this because the narrator kept changing volume, which meant it went from calm monologue to loud yells sporadically. To save my ears, I quit.

Historia
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Boring and unsatisfying
Revisado: 12-09-15
Imagine someone you know has lived through an amazing, major historical event and you ask them to tell you about it. And they do--with excruciatingly superfluous detail. I only continued listening out of pity for the narrator who had had the displeasure of trying to emote through boring dialogue and tediously dull battle scenes. Don't expect that detail to extend to the aliens or to a deeper philosophical query. Instead, the author, like your senile grandfather, will tell you the same joke twice that his drinks were all bought for him--even though they are free for the CDF. So unsatisfying.
