Another fantastic, gripping Ariel Lawton book!

The backwards sequence of the plot makes an unusual and unexpected read, without being confusing, which is impressive. The characters are well written, the plot is gripping and I couldn’t stop listening to the book. The narrators were top notch.

Historia
Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida—war photographer, gambler, and closet queen—has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. In a country where scores are settled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts with grudges who cluster round can attest. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali.

Spellbinding book
Revisado: 05-30-23
I actually read this book in print, and loved it so much I decided to listen to it as an audiobook as well. The narrator did a perfect job with pacing and different characters. He really brought the book to life for me. It is a fairly complicated plot with many characters, so a great narrator is critical. The novel itself is one of my all time favorites. It is bitingly funny while still dealing empathetically with a devastating, horrible topic (civil war in Sri Lanka in the 1980’s, and death and human misery in general). The main character is a gay photographer in the afterlife who is trying to figure out who killed him before seven moons pass when he has to go into the light. I won’t give a major plot summary here- you can find it online, but the characters are well developed and believable. The mystery is compelling, and the philosophy is beautiful.

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 06-13-20
I will definitely go back and re- listen to this masterpiece, as I am sure there are nuances I missed on first go. Beautiful Irish accent of the narrator adds so much to this book. The writing is poetic and musical, but accessible. The life of women in troubled Ireland (although Ireland is never specifically mentioned) is powerfully exposed. Can’t wait to discuss it in book club.

Historia
When Pentagon bioterror operative Roberto Diaz was sent to investigate a suspected biochemical attack, he found something far worse: a highly mutative organism capable of extinction-level destruction. He contained it and buried it in cold storage deep beneath a little-used military repository. Now, after decades of festering in a forgotten sub-basement, the specimen has found its way out and is on a lethal feeding frenzy. Only Diaz knows how to stop it.

Historia
After her father's sudden death, Alexandra Fuller realizes that if she is going to weather his loss, she will need to become the parts of him she misses most. So begins Travel Light, Move Fast, the unforgettable story of Tim Fuller, a self-exiled British black sheep who moved to Africa to fight in the Rhodesian War before settling as a banana farmer in Zambia. A man who preferred chaos to predictability and was more afraid of becoming bored than of getting lost, he taught his daughters to live as if everything needed to happen altogether, all at once - or not at all.

Another beautiful Alexandra Fuller book!
Revisado: 09-25-19
Fuller is one of my favorite authors, and she doesn’t disappoint in her latest. It’s lovely that the author herself reads it. She is witty, sharp and self-deprecating. This is a beautiful eulogy for her father, a testimony to both of her parents’ and a love song to Africa, with a devastating ending. Read her other books first if you can, but even if you can’t, this is worth it.

Superstar comedian and Hollywood box-office star Kevin Hart turns his immense talent to the written word by writing some words. Some of those words include: the, a, for, above, and even even. Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller.

Historia
Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother’s pink scarf. Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he’s received and the disappearance of Jonas’s mother - and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn....

Historia
Gene Wilder is one of the great comic actors who defined the 1970s and 1980s in movies. From his work with Woody Allen, to the rich group of movies he made with Mel Brooks, to his partnership on screen with Richard Pryor, Wilder's performances are still discussed and celebrated today.

Enjoyed his acting, his writing not so much
Revisado: 01-09-17
This book seemed like a boring linear description of all the times Gene Wilder had sex. I was uninterested in his sex life before I heard the book and positively bored by it after. When he gets to the part where he whines that he was no longer having sex with Gilda Radner - because she was fighting stage four OVARIAN CANCER - I wanted to scream at him. What kind of jerk writes that in a book? It's so self-centered and selfish. The writing was pedestrian. Wilder was funny in his films, but I found very little amusing in his book. Sorry I bothered.

Historia
In the aftermath of Ireland's financial collapse, dangerous tensions surface in an Irish town. As violence flares, the characters face a battle between public persona and inner desires. Through a chorus of unique voices, each struggling to tell their own kind of truth, a single authentic tale unfolds. The Spinning Heart speaks for contemporary Ireland like no other novel. Wry, vulnerable, all-too human, it captures the language and spirit of rural Ireland and with uncanny perception articulates the words and thoughts of a generation.

Tremendous story and narration
Revisado: 11-19-16
This is a gripping story of an Irish community during the post 2008 recession/depression. The story is told from the perspective of all different narrators in the community. Every chapter reveals something new about both the plot and the other characters. Each narrator gets only one chapter. The result is a tightly fit puzzle of brilliant description and exposition. I ended the book wanting to go back and re-listen all over again. The narrator is top notch, using varied voices to pull you into each character's story. The plot is perfectly played out and the narrator makes it perfect.
