Historia
In the snowbound city of Kiev, wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son—but Hitler’s invasion of Russia sends her on a different path. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious girl to deadly sniper—a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour.

Historical fiction delivers!
Revisado: 01-14-23
Fascinating look at the Russian point of view from a real person. Kate Quinn is so good at blending real life and some fiction to bring people to life and teach us something with feeling about others during a horrific time and yet let us have some sort of a good ending as well.

I didn’t enjoy this book. The characters changed how they were feeling or acting one way and completely flipped to the other wa-sometimes in the same sentence. . Nobody grew. In fact the main strong character regressed. No humor. Then have a tragedy and quick wrap up and all tied in a bow. Nope didn’t work.

Historia
In Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox - possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

Fascinating different book
Revisado: 09-05-20
I cannot do justice to this book as it is so difficult to write about without spoilers or sounding like a weirdo. I’m just a “time being” and I won’t look at life the same. To think differently about life, and learn things about a culture I had no knowledge of as well, and care deeply for the characters-well that is a good book!

Historia
It is 1914, and the world has been on the brink of war so often many New Yorkers treat the subject with only passing interest. Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling to St. Petersburg with Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanovs. Eliza embarks on the trip of a lifetime to see the splendors of Russia. But when Austria declares war on Serbia, Eliza escapes back to America, while Sofya and her family flee to their country estate. In need of domestic help, they hire the local fortune-teller’s daughter, Varinka, unknowingly bringing intense danger into their household.

Doesn’t quite live up to Lilac Girls
Revisado: 08-17-20
Eliza character was not very well developed as a strong woman character and I found her emotionally confusing— her dedication to Henry and yet infatuation with Meryl. The story between them was not clear and vague references to a past that we were not a part of was off-putting. I didn’t much like her. The narration or her tone was jarring.
Sofya was a different story-this character made you feel; her soft spoken words, accent and tone had me teared up even with just her exchange with her horse. Her manner and plight were understood-and her growth was well done. Definitely my favorite character.
Varenka remains an enigma. You don’t get to understand her very much. A few things get cleared up towards the end, but you never find out what happens to her-or to the brute Tarus. Or her mother! Too many loose ends for that character.
So for the reasons where only one of the 3 is complete-I rated this a 3. It was OK. But not on the same level as The Lilac Girls.

Uneven character development
Revisado: 07-30-20
The old lady was not recognizable from herself as a child. Her attitudes and demeanor showed no growth from the experiences she endured. The story itself was okay but not believable at her action as a young mother in order to get the storybook ending. It is not a book I would recommend
The narration was grating, the accents atrocious and the tone of the men was awful. I had a hard time listening to it.

It’s a different war story book. I really was invested in the characters brought to life by the superb reading and inflections of the narrator. Truly enjoyed it.

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Slow start
Revisado: 02-26-20
The narrator was really great. Parts of the story was too unbelievable for present day relationships-and a much better job on the past. So it was a bit uneven. I did end up liking the book and being moved by it-despite some really bad irony at the end.

Narrator too good at whining
Revisado: 03-09-19
The story overall was okay with some eye rolls in certain places. It wrapped up unevenly but all in keeping with the overall theme. Clever use of Ursa made you wonder if real or fantasy until the very end. But the narration of a 9 yr old was grating to say the least. It was annoying. I would rather the narration be a reading and not playing the character-as least in that regard!
