Historia
On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and suffered an astonishingly low rate of casualties. A stunning military achievement, it was also a masterpiece of trickery. Operation Fortitude, which protected and enabled the invasion, and the Double Cross system, which specialized in turning German spies into double agents, tricked the Nazis into believing that the Allied attacks would come in Calais and Norway rather than Normandy.

This is one of the finest spy books of WW2. It is quite comprehensive, covering key spies aiding the allies up to D-Day and the aftermath of the Normandy invasion. Especially it covers the deceptions of double agents w.orking for the allies in misdirection the German resources away from Normandy allowing allied forces to gaiin the beach head there, thereby ultimately winning the war. Wonderful book.

Historia
The Great Game between Victorian Britain and Tsarist Russia was fought across desolate terrain from the Caucasus to China, over the lonely passes of the Parmirs and Karakorams, in the blazing Kerman and Helmund deserts, and through the caravan towns of the old Silk Road - both powers scrambling to control access to the riches of India and the East. When play first began, the frontiers of Russia and British India lay 2000 miles apart; by the end, this distance had shrunk to 20 miles at some points.

The Great Game
Revisado: 06-06-19
Peter Hopkirk is one of the finest and most thorough authors writing about central Asia. All of his books are excellent. In an era in which this part of the world is increasingly important, Hopkirks insights and material is very important. Sadly, his works are becoming less available. Would that more Audible and kindle versions of some of his works were available.

Historia
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.

The Woman Who Smashed Codes
Revisado: 05-29-19
The Woman Who Smashed Codes is an absolutely fascinating book. It conveys the excitement and importance of cracking codes to the war effort. The subject of the book is a quiet, unassuming woman whose devotion to the war effort. She was a humble hero, who sought no noteriety for herself and only wanted to serve and help the war effort.

Historia
The first robot to walk the earth was a bronze giant called Talos. This wondrous machine was created not by MIT Robotics Lab, but by Hephaestus, the Greek god of invention, more than 2,500 years ago. In this groundbreaking account of the earliest expressions of the timeless impulse to create artificial life, Adrienne Mayor tells the fascinating story of how ancient Greek, Roman, Indian, and Chinese myths envisioned artificial life, automata, self-moving devices, and human enhancements - and how these visions relate to and reflect the ancient invention of real animated machines.

Typical of the books of Adrienne Mayor this book was wonderful. As per usual it was well researched, well organized, and well written. Having read all of her books, I have delighted in each one and constantly look for her next publication. Mayor is an outstanding scientist, a great thinker, and a fine writer.

Why were Prometheus and Loki envisioned as chained to rocks? What was the Golden Calf? Why are mirrors believed to carry bad luck? How could anyone think that mortals like Perseus, Beowulf, and St. George actually fought dragons, since dragons don't exist? Strange though they sound, however, these "myths" did not begin as fiction.

The only Major League ballplayer whose baseball card is on display at the headquarters of the CIA, Moe Berg has the singular distinction of having both a 15-year career as a catcher for such teams as the New York Robins and the Chicago White Sox and that of a spy for the OSS during World War II. Here, Dawidoff provides "a careful and sympathetic biography" ( Chicago Sun-Times) of this enigmatic man.
