boring
Revisado: 10-23-20
The narrator has a pleasant enough voice but pretty much every character sounds the same and, for the men, that means sounding like a big, dumb oaf.
The plot had a lot of potential and for a while I had high expectations. But unfortunately nothing really scary happens. There's a few instances of gore but other than that most of the plot progress happens in the last 10% of the story. The whole rest of the book is a slow, fairly uneventful build up for what eventually ends up being.... not much.

Solara Brooks needs a fresh start, someplace where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. The outer realm may be lawless, but it's not like the law has ever been on her side. Still, off-world travel doesn't come cheap; Solara is left with no choice but to indenture herself in exchange for passage to the outer realm.

Good story, so-so narrator
Revisado: 08-02-19
I thought this was a cute story with a fairly good plot. Nothing spectacular but still entertaining. My biggest gripe was how the narrator voiced Doran. She made him sound kind of weak and soft the entire book... he doesn't sound arrogant when he should or strong when he should or anything else. it was a bummer. Maybe part of the issue is also that Amanda Dolan has an audible lisp... I'm not sure.

HORRIBLE NARRATOR!
Revisado: 07-30-19
The story was pretty good. But I had to buy the actual book about 15 minutes in to the audiobook because the narration, Angela Goethals, was that godawful. Seriously. She was mostly monotone, She over-enunciated EVERY syllable so it sounded like she was jerkily forcing each word out. Plus, would stop mid sentence like there was a period only to then finish the sentence a a second later. It was so bad and so distracting that I couldn't keep listening. The only bright side here is that I now know to actively avoid anything she narrates.

I really wanted to like it...
Revisado: 03-15-18
First, Khristine Hvam is amazing as narrator. But Forest is, unfortunately, just another whiney, selfish, ungrateful, cry baby. It was hard enough to deal with in book 1 but she's positively UNBEARABLE in this one. She gets everything she ever wanted and then goes against the good advice everyone constantly gives her when she has her melodramatic breakdowns and screws it all up. Of course. She repeatedly treats the amazingly patient and sweet Sylas like complete crap. She needlessly hurts him over and over and over and he just keeps taking her back. That's probably the worst part of it all. Yes, these types of books often have unrealistic relationships.... it can make them entertaining. But it stops being fun and romantic when one person is a hateful jerk again and again while the other just takes all the abuse andimmediately forgives them. Had he ever called her on her crap and then made her actually earn his trust back I could be here writing a totally different review. ******SPOILER******* The part that made me decide I was done with the series was the end where Forest has the gall to CRY over the death of the man who raped and enslaved her. She holds his hand and tells him it could have been different and that she'd have given him her love freely because she does love him -if only he had been kind to her. Syras sees and gets pissed but less than 5 mins later she makes him think he's the jerk and gets him to apologize to HER!!!! It was total BS. Read at your own peril. lol

Original, interesting story - AWFUL narration.
Revisado: 11-01-16
What did you like best about The Devil's Fool? What did you like least?
This book is full of familiar types of supernatural beings but the story itself is fairly original. I've read so many books of this genre that I can usually pin down the plot by the end of the first couple chapters but this one had me wondering about some things. The worst part of this book was the narration. It's seriously bad... Veronica Fox - when speaking as Eve - is completely monotone most of the time. I think it's her attempt to sound hopeless and weary but someone with more experience would realize there's a huge difference. When she was speaking as Boraz the vampire she tried to make him sound smooth and bad-boyish but he just sounds like a somewhat monotone used car salesman. Her best narration was Eve's wine-loving, drunk aunt but that was all of about 5 minutes total speaking time.
What did you like best about this story?
Some parts of the story kept me wondering. Most supernatural romance books follow a pretty well worn path so it was nice that this one had some elements that I wasn't able to immediately figure out.
How could the performance have been better?
I think that if she were to take some acting classes (because really, that's what this is - voice acting) she'd improve remarkably. It was just way too monotone through the entire book.
Do you think The Devil's Fool needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It has follow up books....

Very promising - but no Harry Potter similarities
Revisado: 07-22-15
What does Alana Kerr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think Alana Kerr did an absolutely amazing job narrating. She has a beautiful speaking voice and her accents are wonderful.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I was a bit disappointed that it was marketed as similar to Harry Potter because nothing could be further from the truth. Unless by "similar" they meant both stories include a magical "other world" that is invisible to mortals but that's where the similarities end. That being said, it builds a wonderfully unique, dystopian world of its own. There's not as much action as I had hoped for but it's clear that this first book is building up to bigger and better things. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Such an awesome series!
Revisado: 07-02-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Off to Be the Wizard to be better than the print version?
Yes, but not because the print version is deficient in any way. The audio version is better simply because the narrator Luke Daniels does an AMAZING job! The female voices don't sound like drag queens and I had to check several times to make sure this wasn't an ensemble piece because his male voices sound SO distinct. It's really pretty incredible. AND each voice is perfect for the character. When I can't listen to an audiobook for some reason I switch to the print version and, in the case of this series, I hear each of the audiobook voices in my head as I read.
What other book might you compare Off to Be the Wizard to and why?
I really have no idea... it's such a unique premise and it succeeds as both comedy and fantasy.
Which character – as performed by Luke Daniels – was your favorite?
Definitely Phillip. He had me cracking up through the whole book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, definitely. And if it weren't for requiring sleep and having to do a little bit of work while at work I probably would have.
Any additional comments?
You'll love this book even if you don't normally read sci-fi or fantasy books. It's hilarious!

wonderful and magical story!
Revisado: 06-20-15
I love that the author, Neil Gaiman, narrates his books because you know you're hearing the story exactly how it's meant to be. And he has a lovely voice with a great accent. The story was fantastic and magical. it moves along at a good pace and never lags. I do wish that the magical world of London Underneath had been developed more... kind of like how JK Rowling developed the Harry Potter universe . I think it sucks the reader in more and makes them become invested in said world when they can picture it easily in their mind and see themselves there.

The folks in Mike Erikson's small New England town would say he's just your average, everyday guy. And that's exactly how Mike likes it. That is, until an old friend presents him with an irresistible mystery, one that Mike is uniquely qualified to solve.

Read / listen to Peter Cline's book 14 first!
Revisado: 06-15-15
I just finished listening to the book 14 by Peter Cline when a friend recommended The Fold. Somehow I just didn't notice both books were by the same author but serendipitously I read 14 BEFORE The Fold since the author actually ties the events of both together and everything in 14 happens first. I think they should be marketed as a series because in reality if you don't read 14 first you actually don't grasp the significance of a lot of important events in The Fold. And the importance of the last chapter will be totally lost on you. Other than that my only complaint is I wish there'd been a bit more action. Oh, and there's a part where a character is referencing when Commander Ryker's "twin" (from Star Trek) joins the Maquis and the narrator pronounces it "maw-kiss" instead of "maw-key". But it's a good book and the narrator is awesome! ! He can do a number of different voices and accents really well and he does female voices much better than lots of other male narrators.
