This is the way an origin story should be written

It’s not until about a quarter of the way through the book that you understand how much the characters name is a foreshadow. Listening to this character continually struggle and work for every inch made his story so much more enjoyable. They’re just enough hints about what might be coming next that it makes me truly eager for the next book.

Severe disappointment

I listen to audiobooks regularly while working and am willing to tolerate a lot, but I just can’t listen to this one. The prose is stiff and simplistic and difficult to listen to and the voice actor is completely wrong for this story. Most voice actors fade into the background as the story takes over, this casting was so jarring that I kept being pulled from the story to wince at the voice.

A fun well paced read.

First off I recommend this audiobook. It was really fun to listen to and I found myself laughing out loud in several sections. That said it does suffer from one aspect that a lot of Michael Anderle’s books have (in my opinion only) The heroes don’t really struggle that much. They are fortunate enough to have the right skills or the right companions to overcome every obstacle they encounter.

To draw an analogy, There is a fairly commonly accepted truism that states the military is always preparing to fight the last war. It is because you can’t know what you don’t know. You can only do your best to prepare for as many possible contingencies as you can imagine. When problems come up you have to adapt, problem solve, develop new tools or strategies...

So as much as I enjoy his writing that la k of struggle, loss and effort to overcome sometimes leaves me unsatisfied.

I used to worry about what I would listen to next

That’s, pretty much, the summary of this review, but here is a bit more. I am a painter (canvas, not house) and I spend ridiculous periods of time with my butt planted in front of a canvas. I didn’t used to think so, but there really is only so much music you can listen to continuously, so books on tape, or my phone or whatever. After doing this for a number of years, I have understandably run through quite a number of books, and I am understandably always looking for the next thing to listen to. Enter the Kutherian universe and the problem is solved. The stories are imaginative, and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. There are now so many writers, of such high quality, that I should probably be entertained for years to come.
