Poor storyline and plot
Revisado: 04-05-25
This was the worst book from this author that I have read. The decent performance by the narrator could not offset the poor plot line. It was so obvious what was going on, and yet everybody just ignored all of the clearly visible clues. Worse yet, it had interesting characters who simply went from one impossible situation / fight to another- just barely escaping each time. I won’t be continuing this series.

The narrator - Nicholas Guy Smith - saved this weaker novel in the series.
Revisado: 03-15-25
As noted in my title, the narrator really saved this book. The first two books in the series were far superior. It made me wonder if the publishers didn’t rush the author to create the third book in the series. It is basically a story where the characters nearly get killed, are on the verge of death and are suddenly and miraculously saved. Then just repeat, repeat and repeat. The only interesting part of the story really was Pug’s return to the alien planet.

Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Narration and character development at their best
Revisado: 02-11-25
The writing, historical context and character development are just fantastic, particularly in the first 2/3 of the book. Further, the narration is just great- I’ll likely look for other books he has narrated.
My only complaint is that the fantastic story, that is tied together so nicely for the majority of the book, starts to slide away in the last third of the book. A few parts/ interactions were so different as to simply not fit and I sped the book up to power through them. I did like the ending- seemed very fitting!!

Not the best Dreyfus book- holes everywhere in this one.
Revisado: 01-02-25
Well read and excellent dialog as usual but the story was just so/ so. A bunch of holes in this one.
Still love the series but just average this time.

Ten thousand city-state habitats orbit the planet Yellowstone, forming a near-perfect democratic human paradise. But even utopia needs a police force. For the citizens of the Glitter Band that organization is Panoply, and the prefects are its operatives. Prefect Tom Dreyfus has a new emergency on his hands. Across the habitats and their hundred million citizens, people are dying suddenly and randomly, victims of a bizarre and unprecedented malfunction of their neural implants.

Decent, but not his best work
Revisado: 11-27-24
Another Prefect Dreyfus story but it wasn’t that interesting. Totally predictable minus the one big surprise, which didn’t alter much. Just not up to his normal standard but I do love his writing style.

Interesting story, unbearable dialog
Revisado: 11-27-24
Granted, this is geared more to teens and young adult but I like the genre and was trying to find a new series. This storyline is interesting but the dialog was “not good”, to be polite. I made it through Chapter 5 and could take no more. Shadow and Bone was much better writing, in my opinion.

Historia
It seemed the perfect place to lie low. The owner of the ranch was an attractive, gray-haired lady who had once been an actress. The other woman was a beautiful, fragile-seeming blonde. They needed repairs done, and he needed to disappear for a while. The first sign that things were not as they should be was when a Pinkerton man questioned him about a missing woman. Then he accidentally found a will belonging to the previous owner of the ranch. After that, a young lady showed up in town making claims that the place belonged to her.

Weak story, very basic for L’Amour

Entertaining enough but very basic for Louis. His stories are usually a bit more credible. This was the worst of his books that I have read and I have read close to 100.

Revisado: 06-28-24
Basically, if you read a few decent articles on longevity, you could get all this book has to offer in about an hour or two. This was laborious to listen to for a few basic points. He is a doctor and former consultant- and it showed. I wouldn’t waste the time here.

A knowledge of China's imperial history is vital for any understanding of its present, as modern China is linked in many ways to the extraordinary culture of its empire. These 24 lectures take you to the heart of life during China's imperial era, through the lives of individual subjects of all social ranks. Across the arc of the course, you'll witness what daily life was like for government bureaucrats, for scholars, for women of the court, for soldiers, merchants, craftspeople, courtesans, imperial cooks, and many others.

The Worst of The Great Courses so far
Revisado: 03-06-24
This was my seventh or eighth historical “great courses“ course/audiobook. For starters, let’s just say that I was begging for it to end, which is never a good sign. The issue was that the book largely just describes culture life in China during each dynasty in.. Clearly, per the title, this is part of what the book would cover. However, if you are looking to understand what caused the changes from dynasty to dynasty and the evolution, politically in China, this book offers almost nothing. The authors description of daily life is actually quite excellent in each period but the problem is that life is rather similar period to period and dynasty to dynasty. Thus, you are hearing slight variations of the same story again and again throughout the course. I have never wanted to end any of these courses as fast as possible before, but this one could not end fast enough for me.
