Historia
A Rome of One’s Own is a retelling of the history of Rome with the Important Things, but also all the things Roman history writers relegate to the background—or designate as domestic, feminine, or worthless. This is a history of individuals, twenty-one women who span the length of its territory and its centuries, who caused outrage, led armies in rebellion, wrote poetry, lived independently or under the thumb of emperors. A Rome of One’s Own highlights women overlooked and misunderstood, and through them offers a fascinating and groundbreaking chronicle of the ancient world.

Historia
By the time she became US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch had seen her share of corruption, instability, and tragedy in developing countries. But it came as a shock when, in early 2019, she was recalled from her post after a smear campaign by President Trump’s personal attorney and his associates—men operating outside of normal governmental channels, and apparently motivated by personal gain. Her courageous participation in the subsequent impeachment inquiry earned Yovanovitch the nation’s respect, and her dignified response to the president’s attacks won our hearts.

Outstanding read
Revisado: 01-14-23
Outstanding read, from an outstanding person. Will be giving this book to my great nephew in a year or two when he's old enough. Hopefully it will spur in him, an interest in the State Department and the interesting jobs it offers. Ms. Yovanovitch is inspiring, humble and a patriot to the core. I watched her hearings live and was so awestruck, that when I saw her book I immediately bought it. Hearing her full history, I am even more awestruck with this wonderful person.

Come with us to an Enchanted Place, a forest where Winnie-the-Pooh lived with Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Eeyore, Kanga, and Little Roo. The stories are about Christopher Robin and these good companions having wonderful times getting in and out of trouble. It is all very exciting and, really, quite thrilling no matter how young or old you may be. It is painful to try and imagine what the world would be like without them.

In his newest collection of essays, David Sedaris lifts the corner of ordinary life, revealing the absurdity teeming below its surface. His world is alive with obscure desires and hidden motives, a world where forgiveness is automatic and an argument can be the highest form of love. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is another unforgettable collection from one of the wittiest and most original writers at work today.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Compelling story of strength and forgiveness
Revisado: 12-30-14
Any additional comments?
It still boggles my mind about what he went through. It's something that you just can't wrap your head around at times. I'm grateful that Mr. Zamperini shared his story and that Ms. Hillenbrand brought it to life in such an absorbing way. I read this book several years ago and I "carry it with me" still. I often ruminate on it.
I just brought some family members to see the movie. The one thing I am sad about not getting much focus, were his struggles after coming home and his eventual forgiveness of his captors. His life after the war was such a huge part of what makes me go back to this story again and again. It should have been more than a byline in the movie.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I don't have the words. Just buy it and listen to it. You won't regret it.

Historia
Space is a world devoid of the things we need to live and thrive: air, gravity, hot showers, fresh produce, privacy, beer. Space exploration is in some ways an exploration of what it means to be human. How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? Have sex? Smell flowers? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive a bailout at 17,000 miles per hour?

How to not swallow puke in space
Revisado: 12-30-14
What made the experience of listening to Packing for Mars the most enjoyable?
I had such a good time reading this book. The kinds of things NASA had to think of and create solutions for, that wouldn't even cross a normal person's mind like "What happens if you puke in your helmet" had me reading this book well into the night. So cool and a must for any "space junkie" like me.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Packing for Mars?
The list of problems we need solutions for (for the long flight and safe return home of humans) still sticks with me.

What made the experience of listening to The Cuckoo's Calling the most enjoyable?
Excellent! Just excellent! Buy it, read it, you won't be disappointed.
Such an immensely thick plot, with so many variables. I was enthralled throughout the whole book and tried as hard as I could to figure out "whodunnit" (as they say) and was not able to figure it out. Masterful!

Read it twice!
Revisado: 12-30-14
If you could sum up Incognito in three words, what would they be?
Can't. Put. Down.
What did you like best about this story?
This is my first book by David Eagleman and I will be getting more! I had to read it twice it was so fascinating!! The parts about synesthesia were particularly cool. "Hearing" color as in chromesthesia, and seeing numbers as points in space as in spatial sequence synesthesia, etc. it was all so fascinating. I highly recommend the book!
Have you listened to any of David Eagleman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He was pretty good as a narrator.

In a tiny act of rebellion, he lashes out at a small carving on the wall - unexpectedly breaking it off. And then something horrible does happen: a stone pterodactyl unpeels form the wall and starts chasing him. George is already running before his mind starts trying to tell him that this is impossible!

Pass this one up
Revisado: 12-30-14
What was most disappointing about Charlie Fletcher’s story?
"Taints"? Really? That slang term is decades old, so it's not like he didn't know what it means.
Also, unless you want to explain what sexual molestation\incest is to your kid, don't let them read this. The only female characters in this book are also sexually harassed, groped and murdered. The addition of these things is unnecessary and literally feels as though they were callously added, just to try to boost a poor story line. The plot was something I could have come up with when I was 10 and the imagery was predictable and bland. An hour into the book, I was finishing the sentences before I heard them. Not even close to the rich imagery you get from Harry Potter, which this book is trying so hard to be like; and fails so miserably at.
Try any anything by J.K. Rowling, Hans Christian Anderson, Charles Dickens, Suzanne Collins (the Hunger Games Series), or J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan). Those are all MUCH better options.
Which character – as performed by Jim Dale – was your favorite?
The only saving grace was Jim Dale's narration.
