Historia
Always on the periphery, looking on, young Frankie Howe was never quite sure enough of herself to take center stage—after all, life had already judged her harshly. Now old, Frankie finds it easier to forget the life that came before. Then Damian, a young Irish caretaker, arrives at her London flat, there to keep an eye on her as she recovers from a fall. A memory is sparked, and the past crackles into life as Damian listens to the story Frankie has kept stored away all these years.

Frankie is a true understated heroine… bold, soulful & selfless. I knew where the story was headed but savored it anyway.

I so loved “Count the Ways” that I eagerly jumped into Eleanor’s complex family thru her golden years. The story, told here by Maynard herself, transported me eloquently and profoundly to a place of feeling & knowing that surpassed my hopes!!!

Historia
Every summer Teresa follows her father to his childhood home in Puglia, down in the heel of Italy, a land of relentless, shimmering heat. Everything changes the summer she meets the three boys who live on the farm next door: Nicola, Tommaso, and Bern - the man Teresa will love for the rest of her life. Raised like brothers on a farm that feels to Teresa almost suspended in time, the three boys share a complex, intimate, and seemingly unassailable bond. But there is resentment underneath the surface of that strange brotherhood, a twisted kind of love that protects a dark secret.

Reese almost had it all: a loving relationship with Amy, an apartment in New York City, a job she didn't hate. She had scraped together what previous generations of trans women could only dream of: a life of mundane, bourgeois comforts. The only thing missing was a child. But then her girlfriend, Amy, detransitioned and became Ames, and everything fell apart. Now Reese is caught in a self-destructive pattern: avoiding her loneliness by sleeping with married men.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Historia
Arthur Youngblood Hawke, an ex-Navy man moves from rural Kentucky to New York to assault the citadel of New York publishing with his first novel, an oversized manuscript that becomes an instant success. Toasted by critics and swept along on a tide of popularity, he gives himself over to the lush life that gilds artistic success. Love comes with an affair with an older married woman and an unfulfilled flame with his editor, while wealth pours in with the publication of his second novel, and participation in real-estate developments.

I picked this on a whim, daunted by its length & some themes that don’t usually interest me. But it is so skillfully rendered with such fascinating characters (especially Hawk), situations and relationships that held me engrossed to the surprising end.

Virtuoso memoir!!!
Revisado: 05-14-24
I’m a Fifties Brooklyn Jewish girl, production designer & lifelong fan of Barbra. Thought I’d listen sporadically to the audiobook… but it was so intimate & engaging that I wizzed thru 48 hours, rewatching many of the movies. Barbra is a consummate showman. Her words, voice, music & production make this an epic experience. Bravo!!!
