Historia
For a man who insisted that life on the public stage was not what he had in mind, Thomas Jefferson certainly spent a great deal of time in the spotlight. Historian Joseph J. Ellis sifts the facts shrewdly from the legends and the rumors, treading a path between vilification and hero worship in order to formulate a plausible portrait of the man who still today "hover[s] over the political scene like one of those dirigibles cruising above a crowded football stadium, flashing words of inspiration to both teams".

Indelible portrait of a complex visionary
Revisado: 10-04-24
This book is a portrait of the personality of Thomas Jefferson more than a biography. It is propelled by beautiful and nuanced prose. It’s accessible to the general reader and contains a wealth of historiography. The audio book has two minor weaknesses. One, the chapters are far too long most approach two hours. Two, this audio does not capture the revised appendix which came out in 1998 that discusses DNA test results related to Sally Hemming’s children. Since the audio came out later this is inexplicable. But the book is a genuinely beautiful. It is certainly worthy of the National Book Award.

How the Court moved hard to the right
Revisado: 08-10-23
This book is astonishing in its detail from caselaw, personal interviews, speeches. It offers a detailed portrait of the justices. Most interesting was how the justices negotiated rulings. The author also offers some excellent critiques of slight of hand in opinions. Of great interest to lawyers and general interest readers alike.

Historia
Originalism, the view that the meaning of a constitutional provision is fixed when it is adopted, was once the fringe theory of a few extremely conservative legal scholars but is now a well-accepted mode of constitutional interpretation. Noted legal scholar Erwin Chemerinsky gives a comprehensive analysis of the problems that make originalism unworkable as a method of constitutional interpretation. He argues that the framers themselves never intended constitutional interpretation to be inflexible and shows how it is often impossible to know the "original intent" of any provision.

A thoughtful rebuke of Originalism
Revisado: 03-08-23
Originalism has become a major school of thought at the Supreme Court. This book offers a cutting critique of the theory. It is breezy for such a heavy topic. While aimed squarely at lawyers and politicos the book is also for a broader audience interested in the high court.
