Historia
All her life, Annie has played it nice and safe. After being unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Annie seeks a fresh start. She accepts a teaching position that moves her from Manhattan to a small village upstate. She’s stunned by how perfect and picturesque the town is. The people are all friendly and warm. Her new apartment is dreamy too, minus the oddly persistent spider infestation. Then Annie meets Sophie. Beautiful, charming, magnetic Sophie, who takes a special interest in Annie, who wants to be her friend.

Speaks to the Heart and the Spine
Revisado: 06-10-24
I am reading my way through all Rachel Harrison's books. They are so empowering and really speak to my heart. At last, a new female character arc/heroine's journey! I think she must be absolutely brilliant.

Historia
Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Fascinating!

Full of humor, too!
I meant to select How to Change Your Mind, but I am delighted I stumbled on this book. I have never read a book by Michael Pollan I didn't like, and I generally prefer fiction. He tells a good story, this one.

Historia
Edwin St. Andrew is eighteen years old when he crosses the Atlantic by steamship, exiled from polite society following an ill-conceived diatribe at a dinner party. He enters the forest, spellbound by the beauty of the Canadian wilderness, and suddenly hears the notes of a violin echoing in an airship terminal—an experience that shocks him to his core.

Absolutely Brilliant
Revisado: 02-03-23
I loved this even more than Station Eleven.
Writing on par with sci-fi greats like Margaret Atwood, Ursula LeGuin, and Madeline L'Engle.
I loved the artful commentary on post-apocalyptic fiction during a pandemic, book tours, and parenting in uncertain times.
If this book hasn't won an award yet, it should.

Historia
In an expensive London restaurant, Julia Lovat receives a gift that will change her life. It appears to be a book of exquisite 17th-century embroidery patterns - but on closer examination, Julia finds it also contains faint diary entries. In these, Cat Tregenna, an embroideress, tells how she and others were stolen out of a Cornish church in 1625 by Muslim pirates and taken on a brutal voyage to Morocco to be auctioned off as slaves.

I loved this. The story is compelling, the characters are close to the heart, and the lyrical prose is magical on audio.

A little strange as an audiobook...
Revisado: 10-25-22
Great, but frequent internet message boards and tweets were a little hard to follow on audio. I loved the other books in this series as audiobooks, but this one would have been easier to read than listen to.

Historia
The first book of Day by Day Armageddon took us deep into the mind of a military officer and survivor as he made a New Year's resolution to start keeping a journal. The man kept his resolution and brought to us the fall of humanity, day by day. We see the man transition from the life that you and I live to the prospect of fighting for his very survival against the overwhelming hordes of the dead. We see him bleed, we see him make mistakes, we witness him evolve.

Could not finish it
Revisado: 06-13-11
This book, much the same as the first, details the main character (mostly solo) escaping from zombies again and again and again. I am baffled by this Navy pilot, who seems to have no deep love for friends, family, or country.
