Historia
The 17th-century battlefield ushered in a new era, with formed musketeers and pistol-wielding cavalry gradually taking over from the knights and men-at-arms that had dominated the European battlefield. Based on a detailed study of the primary sources, Steel Lobsters tells the story of this transition through the history of the last fully armoured knights in England.

Cole consistently delivers
Revisado: 02-26-25
I've read most of Mr. Cole's work, both fiction and non-fiction. This is another tome that does not disappoint. I wonder if most people appreciate the watershed moment in history covered by this book, when the dominant military technology of heavy cavalry ("heavy" as in actual armor) reached its evolutionary limit in the face of improving firearms. These "tanks on horseback" had a moment to shine (literally), then faded into history.
Cole provides the historical buildup to this moment, and weaves an entertaining (and accurate) personal narrative around it.

Historia
"Welcome to Black Spear." With these four words Cole West is immediately thrust into the shadowy world of the military's most deadly black-ops program. No warning. No training. No choice but to buckle up as Black Spear conscripts him to fight against a paramilitary group of renegade veterans known only as "Terminal." Terminal is no ragtag militia but a veritable private army of disgruntled soldiers with one mission: Stop at nothing to topple the government they think failed them.

I’ve seen the movie a half-dozen times before experiencing the book itself. Easy to see why this was a monster hit.
Excellent performance, although the pronounced background hiss took some getting used to.

Historia
All Ida Mae Jones wants to do is fly. Her daddy was a pilot, and years after his death she feels closest to him when she's in the air. But as a young black woman in 1940s Louisiana, she knows the sky is off limits to her, until America enters World War II, and the Army forms the Women Airforce Service Pilots. Ida has a chance to fulfill her dream if she's willing to use her light skin to pass as a white girl. She wants to fly more than anything, but Ida soon learns that denying one's self and family is a heavy burden, and it's not what you do but who you are that's most important.

Historia
Passage at Arms tells the intimate, detailed and harrowing story of a climber crew and its captain during a critical juncture of the war. Cook combines speculative technology with a canny and realistic portrait of men at war and the stresses they face in combat. Passage at Arms is one of the classic novels of military science fiction.

Get it in print instead
Revisado: 05-21-23
I got the impression this book was written with lots of short sections and spaces between them to signify a break, or a switch to a new instant of observation from the main character. If a so, the producers did nothing to signify that, resulting in what seems like a steady narration that leaps all over the place. It was jarring to me and made it difficult to sink into the story.
Really interesting story, but consider checking out
The print/eBook if that style of verbal storytelling would throw you.

Knocking off a bank or an armored truck is merely crude. Knocking off an entire republic has, I feel, a certain style." So says mining magnate Sir James Manson, a shadowy titan of London's financial district, who is scheming a coup d'état in the small West African dictatorship of Zangaro, where a secret source of platinum lies waiting to be exploited.

The endless bookkeeping gets a little onerous, at least it did to me. Not a lot, but a little. All of it was solid, consistent, and entirely worth the final ten minutes of this novel, which left me gutted. Magnificent.

She was a monster, sleek and gleaming, designed to strike without warning like the dreaded shark. She was the USS Mako, as fearless and bold as any submarine that ever prowled the blue Pacific. Here is the story of the men who pitted their lives against impossible odds in the most dangerous branch of the American armed services.

Revisado: 03-04-22
What a fun, educational, gripping story. Gearheads will love it for the detail porn. There were times I thought the author was going overboard (pun intended) on refs and detail, but in the end, everything lays off. The writing itself at times seemed a bit stilted (with a bit of cringe), but as a book published in 1980, it’s indicative of that’s era of popular literature.
All my reservations about this book, however, we’re blown away by the end. This beast iPad action-packed and a ton of fun.
