Okay Read
Revisado: 01-25-23
I want to start by making clear that I do not regret listening to this book, it was an enjoyable enough story. However, as some of Kelly Rimmer's other books have been so, absolutely, breathtakingly, phenomenal and quickly became favorites, my expectations were high. Honestly, this one didn't meet my expectations. It was enjoyable but I didn't get drawn in, swept away, can't put the book down enjoyment from it as I had expected and hoped.

Perfect, Relaxing, Feel Good Read
Revisado: 12-19-22
Though the story line seemed a bit slow to start, I stayed with it because I found the writing style very interesting, creative and appealing to me. The reader also drew me in immediately. it is as though she was made to read this book! I cannot say enough how much I loved when she brought to the reading!
Once the story did begin to take shape, I was glad I had stuck with it. It's a fanciful tale, but in a way that seems perfectly suited to a feel good Christmas story.
I was sad when it was over! it seemed to end much too quickly.

Not As Delighted As I'd Hoped
Revisado: 02-11-22
Overall, I was underwhelmed by this book, which twas unfortunate because I had high expectations and was eager to listen to it. Maybe I had undue high expectations given the well known author.
I really struggled to finish the book as it just failed to capture my interest. The story, while not entirely bad felt really slow moving and left me feeling like I was waiting for it to get truly interesting all the way up to the end.
The writing also seemed rather simplistic as though written either by or for a younger person. It seemed there was a LOT of repetition in stating and unnecessarily restating throughout much of the book.

Historia
In the opening pages of Jamie Ford's stunning debut, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle's Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, the owner opens a Japanese parasol.

Amazing!
Revisado: 07-10-21
Oh my goodness I truly can't say enough good things about this book! I wasn't sure what to expect, being unfamiliar with this author and having just experienced an unfortunate dud (NOT by this author), so in truth my expectations weren't high. This was one of those rare (for me) books I couldn't put down.
It it definitely different from what I would consider my normal go to. Written from the perspective of a Chinese American about a very unfortunate part of America's history, the interment of Japanese Americans during the second World War. I enjoyed the cultural insights and perspective as well as the better understanding of those unfortunate, ugly times.
I'm truly sad to be finished with the book.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 04-05-21
Overall, I found it an interesting and enjoyable story. While it didn't hold me spell bound, I didn't have difficulty finishing it. I found it particularly interesting as it was a history and a part of the world I am less familiar with. It was enlightening and interesting, albeit in a sad way, to get a glimpse of Romania's troubled past
To me, personally, I found the writing style a bit rough. l felt it was often choppy in some way, often making it difficult to follow. I frequently found myself wondering if I had skipped a page or somehow missed something. There also seemed to be plot lines and characters left dangling throughout the book.

Good As Always, Not Necessarily "The Best"
Revisado: 02-28-20
Given the reviews I had seen proclaiming this book "their best one yet" I have to say I had extraordinarily high expectations. This book did not meet those expectations for me. That is NOT to say that it wasn't good or that I didn't thoroughly enjoy it. It was and I did, I just was anticipating "the best yet". I, in fact, had this one correctly figured out well before the end. So overall, I would say on par with the other Detective Ian Rutledge books which I do enjoy very much. I would definitely recommend this book.

Enjoyed More Than Expected
Revisado: 02-18-20
I was more than a little hesitant about the short story idea. I have to say I was absolutely impressed by how much "story" was packed into this short story. It fairly easily kept my attention, which I wasn't sure a short story could do. I am rather ambivalent in my feelings about the ending. I don't want to give the story away. Suffice it to say, the surprise part of the "surprise ending" isn't the part (the confession) you would expect. I was initially taken aback, but upon thinking about it for a bit, I am rather entertained by, what to me was an unexpected and unusual reaction.

I enjoyed this book so much!
Revisado: 09-19-19
If you are seeking a fast paced, highly suspenseful story, this probably is not the book for you. Still, I absolutely loved it, hated to put it down and was sad when it was done. It pulls you in to a different, and in so many ways simpler time of gentlemen, ladies, butlers, house parties and good manners. I very much liked that it created a good, somewhat complex mystery but also created solid, healthy relationships between Lenox and his family. It seems so often, the detective's personal life is one of chaos and discontent. This was not the case in this book and I found that refreshing. the author created I really satisfying combination of the evil in the world ( the two murders) and the good ( kindly Detective and his healthy relationship with his house staff, friends, and family).
I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of his books!

Katherine Nichols knew she’d had too many drinks, but they were only going a short distance. “There’s no traffic anyway,” Eve had pointed out. And they'd had such a great night out, the two of them. Even now, driving them home and knowing she shouldn’t, seemed almost mischievous. All part of the fun. Not anymore.

I really wanted to like it but never got into it.
Revisado: 09-09-19
I really, really wanted to like this book. It was long and tedious from the beginning, which the main character notes early on and states that it is for effect. Unfortunately, it didn't get any better.
I would consider the storyline to be somewhat different from what is, at least to me, "usual" and for that reason, though it wasn't a page turner for me, and easily put down, I kept listening. I felt like, it was "about to become interesting" all the way through but didn't really get there until the last couple chapters.
For me, a great book pulls you into an alternate reality of sorts. It takes you to a place you hate to leave and can't wait to return to and leaves you feeling lost when it's over. This book did not do that for me.

A different sort of story
Revisado: 08-29-19
If You Find Me is is a different kind of story, certainly a very different genre from what I normally read/listen to. I purchased it because it was on sale. I'm glad I did. Emily Murdock draws you into the lives of 2 children, girls Carrie and Janessa, who are the victims of their mother's substance abuse and mental illness. She makes you feel the pain of their struggle for normality and healing after they are rescued. She carefully, delicately details the abuse they suffered.
I love that the story is such a beautiful mix of genuine, unconditional, enduring love from her rescuers, and the angst of jealousy from the teenage stepsister. The very understandable struggle Carrie faces between gratitude for a new, better, safer life and her sadness at losing all that was familiar, however terrible it had been. To me, that combination kept the story so real. It was neither all dark and miserable nor all unrealistically sunshine and happy endings.
It was a bit of a difficult story to listen to, as reading of a child's suffering should be. But it was beautifully, compassionately well written.
