Historia
We are in the midst of a powerful psychedelic renaissance. After four decades of hibernation, the promise of the psychoactive 60s - that deeper self-awareness, achieved through reality-bending substances and practices, will lead to greater external harmony - is again gaining a major following. The signs are everywhere, from the influence of today's preeminent psychedelic thinker Daniel Pinchbeck, to the renewed interest in the legacy of Terence McKenna, and to the upsurge of collective cultural phenomena like the spectacle of Burning Man.

Juvenile, biased
Revisado: 06-23-22
The intro to the book was very thoughtful and informative, and laid out the context for which the book written. The intro also provided insightful caveats of which to be aware given the context of the book. Moreover, the intro offered contemporary and multicultural perspectives on psychedelics which were obviously not known or understood by westerners at the time the book was written. The actual book - I could not get past the first chapter. I skipped to the second chapter to no avail as well. The authors use their own cryptic lingo to describe their subjective experiences. I found it neither intellectually, emotionally, nor spiritually stimulating. If you want to read it for historical context, perhaps it would appeal. But to me, it sounds like the nonsensical ramblings of hippies who are overly enamored with the intellect - go figure!

Historia
The series Brilliant as the Sun aims to make this sublime work accessible to any listener by presenting it in the style of a modern novel. Adhering closely to the original text, it brings out the deep meaning of Srimad Bhagavatam and helps the listener easily follow its flow. In this fourth volume, we hear about the appearance of Vishnu’s stupendous boar incarnation, Lord Varaha, who rescues the earth from the demon Hiranyaksha. We also meet the great sage Kardama, who marries Devahuti, daughter of the earth’s emperor Manu.

potentially beautiful text sullied by ignorance
Revisado: 10-10-21
Bhakti is cultivated in part by listening to the pure devotee speak of Lord Krishna. It is a shame the authors of this text determined to demonstrate such ignorance as to assert that the intellect of women is inferior. I've read the arguments given by the authors' teacher and his disciples who defend this error, and I have no interest in engaging - to do so seems an abuse and severe misdirection of the material intellect. Suffice to say that having encountered this egocentric ignorance in the midst of what potentially is an otherwise rather inspired expression of love for the Lord, I felt brought down - psychically injured. As a result, unfortunately, the overall impression of the authors' work is thereby significantly less integrous. Mercifully, we have other teachers who are purely devoted to cultivating pure love for the Lord.

Feels like a friend
Revisado: 01-02-20
I listened to the audiobook version of Over the Top over two days during which I was home working on repairs. This book is downright companionable. Jonathan is candid, vulnerable, brave, and very funny. His story is inspiring, and he tells it well and effectively. I missed his company after I finished the book. I appreciate what he's shared.

Immature
Revisado: 12-31-19
I tried a couple of times to get through this audiobook, but I give up. My overall impression is that Tan France is not mature enough to have written a memoir, or to be offering much meaningful advice beyond how to cultivate attachment to other people's expectations. He spends a lot of time making fun of things he doesn't like. For instance, he claims that no one likes haircolor X, and if you have this haircolor and your friends haven't told you this, then your friends f-ing suck. I suppose it's a dark form of humor that makes him frequently refer to other people (and sometimes himself) using nasty expressions such as "f-ing d-bag", but I don't like to hear that - it's not uplifting. Many of the life lessons he conveys can be paraphrased as: Something someone said hurt my feelings, so I adopted compulsive behaviors to preempt being accused of being inadequate ever again. This book, from what I could get through, does not offer inspiration, let alone entertainment. I hope Tan France continues to grow in love so that he can learn to better accept himself and others.
