Best Rys Bowen Yet - and No Queenie
Revisado: 10-29-24
This was the best Rys Bowen I've listened to. Previous reviewers said that it just ended, but it ended with listeners to 'fill in the rest'. That is somewhat more rewarding. Make your own HEA.
And thank goodness there was no Queenie character!! I can't even listen to "Her Royal Spyness" anymore.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Powerful, Heartwarming, Amazing
Revisado: 09-14-24
Will listen again and again.
This book is AMAZING, and I will forever amend my ratings of the audio books based on this one. I am still tearing and remembering and FEELING about so many of the characters in this book. (l want Rika to live forever!)
DO NOT listen or read the historical notes before you listen to the book, it won't be a spoiler, but it would.
This is a VERY character driven 'mystery-ish' novel. I found it helpful to list the characters with a few 'characteristics' just to keep me straight on all of them. (A lot of them) They all come together but my memory isn't as good as it was. A Lot of extremely interesting characters. (I wish I could at least bold)
HIGHLY RECOMMEND - unless you just listen to audio books to interrupt your life.

Clearly in the minority
Revisado: 08-19-24
This was a good story but not 'great' and I didn't 'love it'. The character development was excellent as usual from CH. I especially didn't care for the narrator; for a while I thought I was listening to a YA book. The story addresses an extremely important topic and each event was painful to listen to. The Protagonist made a more than difficult decision but an example of a great one.
There are enough spoilers in the other reviews. The ones that were not all 5 stars felt the same way about the same things I did. Listening to the next book doesn't sound appealing. Sorry Colleen and Olivia, I don't think this was a waste of time but I don't feel like it's fair to ask for my credit back either.

Historia
Back in college, Jane Lewis would have given anything to be like homecoming queen Connie Bryan. Instead she was just Plain Jane - overweight, frumpy, and painfully shy. That was then. Today, a lovely and confident Dr. Jane Lewis has a thriving psychotherapy practice, her own radio talk show, a beautiful old Louisiana mansion, and her affectionate, nutty dog, Olive, to keep her company. The only thing missing is someone to share her life.

I wish I checked when this was written, but I am so disturbed about "Man and wife" and Dr. and Mrs. Sorenson? She was also a Doctor!! The rest of the story was okay but REALLY? Why was the main character diminished to a second level person and I take issue with that.

Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

LISTEN TO THIS!!
Revisado: 02-07-24
This is such a good story. It is about family and trauma and family connections. I highly recommend this story. I don't write a lot of reviews, but this is worth my time. You will not be disappointed. Oh, and Xe Sands, the 'voice actor' extraordinaire was excellent. More than excellent. I want to meet her more than the author.

I really enjoyed this story. I laughed so many times while listening. It truly had its moments and lightened the stress of the Holiday Season. The characters were great, and the people in Tinsel were hilarious. Will be listening to it again. Best of all, it was free!!

Historia
When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

Inextricable!!
Revisado: 09-21-23
This title had an interesting concept, an interesting plot, but it is so amateurish I was angry. The author used so many completely current issues for black women and men BUT it could have been so much better without the listener going immediately back to headlines. The story from her ancestors being stolen to the USA to other prejudicial issues were valid but not at all written in ANY WAY original - she took most of it directly from headlines. I'm not sure how else to say that except that if I had to hear "inextricable" or "inextricably" one more time I wanted to scream and send the author a Thesaurus!
The narrator also seemed amateurish and I had a difficult time listening to her.
I DID listen to this book - twice - and as I said the concept was extremely good but the delivery - author and narrator - was seriously wanting. Was there an editor? Does she/he need a new profession? I was very sad that this could have been SO MUCH BETTER!!

Messy - Messy - Messy
Revisado: 08-14-23
I'm struggling to write a review for this but wanted to because it is such a mess and needs a warning. There were so many questions in the beginning and SOME of the answers are casually revealed - sneaky and off handedly. The end leaves a lot more questions and was the biggest mess of all. Character development is horrible and it would have been much better if this overly long story used some of the time on that.
Apparently there is a sequel I won't be wasting my time on. This story was predictable, the story line is almost disorienting . It has potential but in its current state it just isn't any better than just okay. Was there an editor for this?

Great, Timley Topic - with a twist
Revisado: 06-19-23
This is a book I will listen to again! It was scary, heart rending, and written in a way that the listener could empathize with the characters. Well developed characters and the story is very timely. NR does it again. A lot of her recent books seemed to be written by 'ghosts' but this one is definitely NR (or one of her better ghosts).
I could only wish I had her family, but don't we all? It is not a wasted credit. It was exciting, but filled with kindness too,
