I felt like I was there in person.
Revisado: 01-13-25
I really enjoyed this book and find it amazing that this is Jennifer's debut novel. It took me a few minutes to get accustomed to the narrator and then she found her grove. Or maybe I did. When the narrator fades away and only the character and the story remains, it's perfect. So, yes I loved the book and by the end, the narrator too.

Twisty and Intense
Revisado: 08-29-24
I'm so glad Christina McDonald continued the Jess Lambert story in this new book. I thoroughly enjoyed it, only guessing part of the "who dunnit" and quite surprised at multiple twists at the end as well as potential leads for the next book. I can't wait to read it.

Memories of Vietnam
Revisado: 07-27-24
Wowza, did this book bring back memories. I joined the Air Force at the end of the war, right out of high school. I volunteered for assignment on Okinawa, thinking it was still a noble calling, to serve our country. Almost 50 yrs later, I still do, to a certain extend. I did not see battle nor wounded, but was tasked with dispersing Costco sized wharehouses

Historia
From the collection Mary Russell's War, "Stately Holmes" delivers the author's signature blend of narrative mastery and historical detail while shining light on previously unexplored corners of the Russell-Holmes universe. Laurie R. King blends her long-running brand of crime fiction with historical treats and narrative sleight of hand.

Wonderful Era-based story within a bigger story.
Revisado: 07-18-24
I was fortunate to hear Robert Dugoni tell the origins story of this book and the connections to his wife's family. Somehow that really helped set the stage for enjoying this book even more.
If you would like to know more about this, read the author's note at the end of the book, I don't think it gives too much away.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. I have a very special signed copy which includes Bob writing the wrong name; I'm not Sarah! He was such a good sport when getting teased about this. It makes it even more special to me. It's a keeper!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Friendship, Hope, Grief, Kindness
Revisado: 11-21-23
Give yourself a lovely treat and read/listen to this book. There are several characters that each play an important role in the story. Tova, the 70 yr old woman who has had deep loss in her life, developes a friendship with a Giant Pacific Octopus who's name is Marcelus, held captive in a local aquarium. Cameron is a 30 yr old "loser" with a good heart, bad choices, and smarter than he imagines. He was abandoned by his mother, no clue about a father, but was raised by a quirky Aunt who lives him dearly. Definitely worth your time to see how their stories intertwine.

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Excellent! One of my all time favorite books
Revisado: 03-25-22
Such an excellent story. Imagine, a young woman as smart as Sherlock Holmes, with the potential of becoming even more so over time. The details, the adventures, and yes the narrator weave a wonderful beginning and a solid base of the many books to follow. Off I go to the next book.
