Starting to get a bit stale...
Revisado: 09-25-24
Other reviews already mentioned the narrator sometimes losing track of whose voice she's doing. I am having some issues with the writing. I really don't need to hear every single physical action a character takes or a constant reiterating of conversations as if we have to be assured characters fill other characters in or we'll never understand how they found things out. The author frequently repeats the same word multiple times in a paragraph or even a sentence. Things are added like she needed padding-gee, glad you specified that he called Debbie and ahe answered her cell phone. I might have thought she answered her shoe phone. The worst verbal tic is an obsession with characters taking "a sip" of whatever they're drinking and picking up and putting down glasses or mugs on specific surfaces. Good thing you told me they put their cup on the kitchen table, I would be totally lost otherwise. This might not be so obnoxious in print, but with an audio book it's starting to give me a tic.

I love this true-crime podcast. They walk the line between reviewing the cases and using humor to take some of the horror down.

Historia
Four children were abducted and murdered outside of Detroit during the winters of 1976 and 1977; their bodies eventually dumped in snow banks around the city. J. Reuben Appelman was six years old at the time the murders began and had evaded an abduction attempt during that same period, fueling a lifelong obsession with what became known as the Oakland County Child Killings. There were few credible leads and equally few credible suspects. That's what the cops had passed down to the press, and that's what the city of Detroit and J. Reuben Appelman had come to believe.

This is as if someone wrote their own story, realized no one would be interested, and just shoehorned in their disorganized thoughts on the Oakland County child murders. Too boring to finish.

Pity this woman's students
Revisado: 02-15-24
The topics are probably interesting, but this professor's delivery is unlistenable. The constant overemphasizing, overenunciating, lack of pacing and overemoting is exhausting. It reminds me of trying to listen to Katie Couric hosting Jeopardy: this weird patronizing tone like they're speaking to children.

Historia
Most folks associate the city of Salem, Massachusetts, with witches, but for Lee Barrett it's home. This October she's returned to her hometown - where her beloved Aunt Ibby still lives - to interview for a job as a reporter at WICH-TV. But the only opening is for a call-in psychic to host the late-night horror movies. It seems the previous host, Ariel Constellation, never saw her own murder coming.

Story is fine. Narrator is atrocious.
Revisado: 11-05-23
The story itself is entertaining, in a don't-think-too-hard Cozy Mystery way. The lead is okay, the romance isn't too annoying, the mystery is fine. The narration is AWFUL. They would get more nuance and inflection using the AI voices from TikTok and YouTube. It's a hyper-enunciated monotone as if they aren't sure what words are, and the only time they vary character voices besides dropping half an octave for men is when they try for an accent and decide Massachusetts accents are basically Long Island. I tried one other in this series and had to stop. I passed entirely on a different series because I saw it was the same narrator.

Performance is fine, setting is so badly done
Revisado: 10-09-23
As a fluffy cozy, it's not so bad, and the ghosts are entertaining, but if your familiarity with horses, horse racing, the Kentucky Derby and Louisville is anything deeper than "I think I saw like five minutes of coverage on NBC once and could maybe find Kentucky on a map with names" give this one a hard pass. Even characters who are allegedly jockeys, trainers, and owners are laughably, incredibly wrong about everything. The author can't even be b
othered to NAME THE HORSE the main character's acquaintance owns. It makes me suspicious of any other books in the series set somewhere outside a vintage clothing store, wondering whether they were as terrible at research as they were with this one.

Cozy with Cupcakes
Revisado: 04-03-23
Exactly what it says: it's a cute cozy series with cupcakes and murder. The characters are fun and especially the supporting staff at the bakery are original and amusing. It loses a star for the story (the reader is fine) because like 99% of cozies, half the protagonist's problems both personally and crime-wise would be solved if she used her big girl words. This goes to the extreme with their rival baker where by book 3 her 'quirky rivalry' antics have passed the point where any sane person would have filed for a restraining order.

Cozy, cute, will leave you craving candy
Revisado: 03-23-23
I love listening to cozy mysteries and am always looking for new ones. I tried the second in this series and immediately got the next. The setting is interesting and the mystery is better than some (not obvious) and the narration is good. I took away one star for the writing because all the characters and the first-person narrator have a slightly stilted voice. Normal people use contactions. If it were just Amish characters (where English is a second language) that would be one thing, but the Englischer do it too, and in an audio book that gets grating.

While I still wish it was the previous two narrators, I was so excited when the latest in this series dropped. The best part is the past mysteries. The "current time" ones seem a little more farfetched and random, but I'm here for the banter between Jack and Penny.
