The main character was an idiotic 16 year old boy
Revisado: 07-17-24
This one could have been excellent if the main character had been a bit older and a bit less stupid. As it is, it makes absolutely no sense that the old detective inspector decides to recruit a 16 year old boy to help him interview suspects and solve the crime. And the 16 year old boy gets everything completely wrong, constantly accuses the wrong people, but then at the end gets praised by everyone for doing his best. It was hugely frustrating. I would have enjoyed the setting and the story if the main character had been anyone else. As it is there’s no way I’m going to read any more of the series.

Historia
Ghost stories date back centuries, but those written in the Victorian era have a unique atmosphere and dark beauty. Michael Sims, whose previous Victorian collections Dracula’s Guest (vampires) and The Dead Witness (detectives) have been widely praised, has gathered twelve of the best stories about humanity’s oldest supernatural obsession. The Phantom Coach includes tales by a surprising and often legendary cast, including Charles Dickens, Margaret Oliphant, Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, and Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as lost gems by forgotten masters such as Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and W. F. Harvey. Amelia B. Edwards’s chilling story gives the collection its title, while Ambrose Bierce ("The Moonlit Road"), Elizabeth Gaskell ("The Old Nurse’s Story"), and W. W. Jacobs ("The Monkey’s Paw") will turn you white as a sheet. With a skillful introduction to the genre and notes on each story by Sims, The Phantom Coach is a spectacular collection of ghostly Victorian thrills.

Boring and terrible narrator
Revisado: 05-15-23
I generally love Victorian ghost stories, but whether it was that this collection was generally dull, or just that the narrator made them dull, I listened to this on double speed just to get through it.
The narrator said everything in exactly the same tone of voice throughout, so that I struggled to pay attention and was thoroughly bored. I would make a point to never buy a book with this same narrator again.

Can’t tell if I didn’t like the book as much or if it was just the terrible narration
Revisado: 03-08-23
The last two books in this series have been narrated by Lesley Manville, who was brilliant. For some reason this book was narrated by Fiona Shaw, who was dreadful. Why was she whispering half the time??? Why did all the characters sound exactly the same??? The narration was so bad that it coloured the whole book for me. I couldn’t tell if I didn’t enjoy the book as much or if it was just the narrator ruining it. I sincerely hope they get Lesley Manville back for book 4. If it’s Fiona Shaw again I won’t be buying it.

OK story but terrible narrator
Revisado: 05-23-22
The early Discworld novels were still finding their feet, and Equal Rites falls into this category. It's a meandering story that loses its point a little, but is still full of fantastic characters and Pratchett's signature brand of creativity and fun.
But where this really fell apart for me was in having Indira Varma as the narrator. I have been eagerly awaiting the re-release of all the Discworld audiobooks, but I was so so disappointed with this. Indira Varma does not, in any way, differentiate between the voices of all the different characters, or even the voices of the characters and the voice of the narrator. I was regularly unsure of whether it was a character or the narrator talking because she read them all in exactly the same way.
The key to a fantastic audiobook is finding a narrator who can give each character an individual voice, so you can tell who is talking without being told. Indira Varma's way of acting Esk was to say all of her lines in a flat monotone. It was so boring to listen to that I ended up speeding it up to double speed to get it over and done with. I will not be buying any of the other books narrated by her. I am so disappointed.

Historia
The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say 'Ho ho ho'—but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again....

Good story but poor narration
Revisado: 01-03-22
I really like an audiobook to be performed, rather than just read aloud. Sian Clifford had a good storytelling voice, but a lot of the characters sounded the same and it was a very nursery read along voice, rather than a performance.
I liked Peter Serafinowicz as Death, but the weird jingling noise for the footnotes was really jarring and didn’t work at all. I like that they’ve kept the footnotes in, but there needs to be a better way of putting them in the story.
This is the first of Penguin’s re-recording of the Discworld series, and I was really looking forward to it. This was a disappointing start, especially as they have replaced the Nigel Planer recording so it’s this or nothing. I think I’ll get the Nigel Planer versions just in case. Hopefully the next instalment is better performed.

Historia
'Anyone who murdered Colonel Protheroe,' declared the parson, brandishing a carving knife above a joint of roast beef, ‘would be doing the world at large a service!' It was a careless remark for a man of the cloth. And one which was to come back and haunt the clergyman just a few hours later. From seven potential murderers, Miss Marple must seek out the suspect who has both motive and opportunity.

Great story, good voice acting
Revisado: 05-10-21
I loved this story - Agatha Christie at her best. The characters were what made this story - I forgot how genuinely laugh out loud funny her writing is, and this story is a classic of village life with such brilliant characters and biting observational wit.
The voice acting was pretty good - he didn’t do a good job of women’s voices, so the old ladies sounded more like gruff old men, but he did at least differentiate between all the different voices and that was the important thing.

Disappointingly bad and never funny
Revisado: 05-16-19
I love Kate McKinnon and I was really hoping this would be as funny and satirical as it was promoted to be.
Spoiler - it wasn’t. I’ll admit, it probably isn’t my kind of humour, but even so I thought Heads Will Roll was poor.
The humour throughout was entirely based on two things: toilet humour (ie fart jokes) and anachronisms (isn’t it so hilarious that this is set in the Middle Ages but we’re talking about memory foam mattresses!!!).
There was no sophistication about the humour - most people grew out of toilet humour after second grade. And the anachronistic humour is an obvious gag that can get a laugh once or twice but doesn’t sustain over 10 episodes. It’s just the same joke over and over again. The humour is never clever, and the language was irritatingly tacky throughout. The characters, like, totally talked, like, you know, the most stereotypical, you know, and annoying, like, teenagers ever, you know, you guys?
I was so disappointed with this - it was immature, it constantly took the easy and obvious way out and never tried to live up to its potential.

Great performance from full cast, not a great story
Revisado: 07-15-15
Gemma narrated the story really well, and there was a great cast of characters. However the actual story was not all that interesting. Audrey's character had good potential, and the authors descriptions of what it is like to suffer from anxiety and depression were accurate, but that made Audrey's sudden and abrupt recovery as soon as she meets Linus all the more unrealistic. It made the reality of what Audrey suffered very trivial, and that was disappointing. There wasn't a lot of conflict and ultimately the story felt contrived and unbelievable.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.
