When former Army officer Oswin Diehl ventures into Mexico in search of fortune, he encounters more than he bargained for—bandits and chaos. Saved by old comrades Ira Hoop and Apache scout Eskaminzim, Diehl is offered a job that leads him to Arizona Territory and a showdown against a powerful conglomerate harassing local mine owners. As Diehl and his resilient team face off against the hired goons of Consolidated American Mining Corporation, the stakes rise.

Great story that will go on my reread list!
Revisado: 10-27-24
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, intrigue, and action in this book. The pacing strikes the perfect balance between action and exposition. The characters felt real, compelling, and consistent throughout.
I know this is a change of pace for the author, but I’m looking forward to future adventures.

Historia
"It's the most wonderful time of the year," the old song tells us. But that doesn't mean the people celebrating it are always so nice. Criminals get the Christmas spirit, too! In this collection of hilarious short stories, you'll see what the thieves, killers, psychos and scumbags are up to come the holidays...and it's not caroling door to door. Well, not unless they're casing the neighborhood for a break-in, as a rag-tag gang does in the title story.

Another Great Set of Stories!!
Revisado: 03-09-24
Steve is a master storyteller. I love how he keeps coming up with compelling settings for stories and these two (and a quarter) stories definitely are worthy additions to the Holmes on the Range canon. Can’t wait for more.

Historia
There are three ways up to Castle View from the town of Castle Rock: Route 117, Pleasant Road, and the Suicide Stairs. Every day in the summer of 1974, 12-year-old Gwendy Peterson has taken the stairs, which are held by strong (if time-rusted) iron bolts and zigzag up the cliffside. At the top of the stairs, Gwendy catches her breath and listens to the shouts of the kids on the playground. One day a stranger calls to Gwendy: "Hey, girl. Come on over here for a bit. We ought to palaver, you and me."

Great short story w/ classic Stephen King premise
Revisado: 08-07-18
Great narration for this short story. Maggie Siff really brought this character to life.
Great tension throughout, with a little cliche turn near the end. Recommended.
