A story of sacrifice and suffering by each of the hero characters, warriors, wives, nurses, citizens. Further detail would require spoilers.

Not my normal genre but took a chance based on good reviews. I was not disappointed. Several twists, unusual plot. Narrator makes this story much better. If there were a +plus rating, Helen Duff would deserve one.

Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

Historia
Ninety-nine elite American soldiers are trapped in the middle of a hostile city. As night falls, they are surrounded by thousands of enemy gunmen. Their wounded are bleeding to death. Their ammunition and supplies are dwindling. This is the story of how they got there - and how they fought their way out. Black Hawk Down drops you into a crowded marketplace in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia with the U.S. Special Forces and puts you in the middle of the most intense firelight American soldiers have fought since the Vietnam war.

Refusal to Learn
Revisado: 12-14-18
The movie does not adequately capture this story and this narrator makes the listen better than reading the book.
Commendable bravery and breathtaking incompetence. I disagree with Bowden’s distinction between Somalia and Vietnam. Both reflect a frustrating futility and the waste of brave men for no ‘defensible reason .Bowden’s quote of Reinhold Neibuhr is absolutely perfect.
Will our military ever learn? Apparently not if Bowden is correct that the military made no effort to study what went wrong.
Shame.

With authoritative reporting honed through eight presidencies from Nixon to Obama, author Bob Woodward reveals in unprecedented detail the harrowing life inside President Donald Trump’s White House and precisely how he makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies. Woodward draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files, and documents. The focus is on the explosive debates and the decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One, and the White House residence.

Surprised POTUS is so upset
Revisado: 09-13-18
Definitely worth a listen.
Narrator is superb.
Woodward ties together a story about which we have heard bits and pieces over last couple of years. Few major revelations.
As I listened, I never had the impression this is a Trash Trump book although it is unlikely to be on the MAGA recommended reading list. Some Good and some not so much about the President and most of the major players.
Much more professional and apparently objective than Fire &Fury.
Trump Supporters and Trump Bashers would benefit from reading this book. Not likely to change minds and few startling revelations but will be helpful to better understand this Administration.

Ken Follett's World Without End was a global phenomenon, a work of grand historical sweep beloved by millions of readers and acclaimed by critics. Fall of Giants is his magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in The Century Trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women's suffrage.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

War is Hell at Home and In Between
Revisado: 03-16-16
A well written, wonderfully narrated tale of war as experienced by French women during WWII. Truly courageous and frightening. Highly recommended. Hard to say whether the sister in the Resistance or the sister at home is stronger, more courageous. Both memorable, dynamic and heroines. These experiences are perhaps more demanding than for soldiers on the front.
