The Best
Revisado: 10-23-17
Mr Catton wrote two sets of three books each about the Civil War. One was on the Army ofThe Potomac . The Other was the definitive study of the war which was published for the 100th anniversary of the war.
This is the final volume of the centennial series. It is the best of a those six masterful works. No books of history, not even those of Foote or McCullough capture both the very personal human experience that history is AND it’s broad sweep as well.
A Stillness At Appomattox begins with a Ball and a single dance in it. From there you will care deeply about the people in this book and gain understanding of what the war did too and for this country.

Historia
A magnificent history of the opening years of the Civil War by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Bruce Catton. The first book in Bruce Catton's Pulitzer Prize-winning Army of the Potomac Trilogy, Mr. Lincoln's Army is a riveting history of the early years of the Civil War, when a fledgling Union Army took its stumbling first steps under the command of the controversial general George McClellan.

Catton. As a historian, he deserves a monument of his own!
Revisado: 12-26-16
Bruce Catton was a boy. A curious boy who tugged at whiskers of old men wanting to awaken the strands of knowledge ONLY these old men could know.
He tugged very well indeed.
Catton obviously loved these quiet, under educated men. He loved them well enough to do them the honor on letting them each come through the fog of war with clarity absolute.
The wonder is that this book is just the first in a trilogy of trilogies. Here is the Army of The Potomac. It's the Union armor of the east but also tells the great ventures of the Confederates who nearly always beat them.
You know the very heartbeat of these men and their fight and tears and incredible laughter too. What a treat their story is. The were ignorant boys to begin the war. Never more than maybe 30 miles from the place they born before or after the war, they learned anything worth knowing at all about all humanity in the short four years they walked and killed in the nation.
Bruce Catton became a magnificent teacher and writer as he studied them and put pencil to his note paper.
You must read him in the same order as the books were made. That is a must to gain Mr Cattons' full power. But make no mistake, there is no "heavy" study here. Just beautiful, vibrant LIFE! (Yes. Even in all this death among the soldiers. War is captured here and in all the world none are more alive than these soldiers.
This book. ALL the others Bruce Catton crafted. Will stun you. Stun you. Absolutely... Stun.

Historia
From one of our most acclaimed new biographers - the first full life of the leader of Lincoln’s "team of rivals" to appear in more than 40 years. William Henry Seward was one of the most important Americans of the 19th century. Progressive governor of New York and outspoken U.S. senator, he was the odds-on favorite to win the 1860 Republican nomination for president. As secretary of state and Lincoln’s closest adviser during the Civil War, Seward not only managed foreign affairs but had a substantial role in military, political, and personnel matters.

One of 5 or 10 best bio's ever written about a American.
Revisado: 07-16-16
Seward does not appear to be as wise or "good" as Lincoln but he was a man of broader dreams, perhaps than ANY President and a better communicator than any too. His "edits" as contributions to the Presidents speeches, orders and documents took them from very good,,, to Historically wise and clear.
His work as attorney, Governor, Senator and chief advisor to the President was all marvelous. Yet this book does not hesitate to show him as seen by his fellow citizens and enemies.
I can compare to a eye exam. You begin knowing how the world looks. But as it continues things become much more clear than you imagine. Sharper of focus and more real in color. And when finished you say, "Ah! THAT is what the world truly looks like!"
This book will truly improve your understanding of our country and its most dangerous time!

Entertains! It's FUN and great reporting too!
Revisado: 04-24-16
Reading this book (and the others in this series Mr Catton wrote) captured my mind and heart when I was a young student.
Catton should me that unknown characters who are not "great figures" play key important and exciting parts in our history! The "big names" would be of no importance without the base of "little guys" they stand upon.
The local town leader who knows how to organize people, the man out in the rural country who learned to be a convincing orator, etc. These people were the ones who formed Lincoln, Davis and Generals like Grant and Lee.
And Bruce Catton wrote about the "little guy" as well as the huge names of history with vibrant eagerness that brings them all to life.
READING his books is exciting. HEARING Nelson Runger read them in audio books will drive Cattons work deep into the banks of knowledge in your brain to stay!
This first book in Cattons trilogy on the Civil War truly should be enjoyed by every student in America. Each of us will love and respect our country to a greater depth for experiencing "The Coming Fury."

Historia
A sweeping, magisterial biography of the man generally considered the greatest president of the 20th century, admired by Democrats and Republicans alike. Traitor to His Class sheds new light on FDR's formative years; his remarkable willingness to champion the concerns of the poor and disenfranchised; and his combination of political genius, firm leadership, and matchless diplomacy in saving democracy during the Great Depression and the American cause of freedom in World War II.

Rare Combination,,, Fact AND Feeling!
Revisado: 03-08-16
The study of history is amazing when truth of BOTH a feeling and a factual nature jumps off the pages.
Agree or not with a given policy of FDR, you will know his feeling as well as his thinking. Not since Carl Sandburg or Bruce Catton history books have I experienced both truths in any one book!
Masterful!

It's Catton!
Revisado: 06-22-15
This is from his over all military history of the Civil War. His OTHER trilogy was about t Union eStern army. the Army of The Potomac.
My Dad was deeply effected even as a boy when Union Veterans who were neighbors would tell of the war as they sat and rocked on a porch next door to the house where Dad's family lived. There eager reverence for comrades AND enemy soldiers lot Dad's eyes and ignited a devotion to Civil War history.
Bruce Catton had the same good fortune. In lectures my father gave and in Catton's writing that eager devotion to the people of America and their stories was evident.
Catton wrote with strict adherence to principles of reporting. Facts. And both he and Dad ALSO had a warm feeling for the individual soldiers and their families. The combination of Journalism ethic and Human carding makes for electrifying,,, and trust worthy,,, reading and listening.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Please! This is NOT "a woman's view!"
Revisado: 06-19-15
M's Kearns Goodwin is indeed a woman. She is foremost a Historian!
Reviews "joyously praising the fresh viewpoint of a woman" just insult the author! Eaquality isn't the goal! This author is not superior or inferior because of her gender. She is superior. It is because she is a great history writer! Her inclusion of women of the period is not to recognize women, but they happen to have been very important figures. Anyone who has read Bruce Catton knows that. He wrote of many of these same women even when his books were primarily MILITARY histories!
