Historia
Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily: we value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian Junger examines this tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human.

Thoughts on independence
Revisado: 01-31-24
Though I think some of Junger's conclusions are hasty and ill-argued, "Freedom" is a great collection of musings on the individual and the collective, grounded in personal experience and historical research.

Historia
The planet of Caliban exists much as it has for thousands of years - the knightly orders protect the common people, fighting back the beasts that lurk in the depths of the seemingly endless forests. Young Zahariel and Nemiel aspire to join the greatest of the orders, led by the example of mighty Lion El'Jonson and his vision of a peaceful and unified world. But the coming of the Imperium brings new concerns and a new destiny for the Lion as part of the Great Crusade, and the sons of Caliban must decide if they will follow him to glory among the stars.

A glimpse at what 40k could be
Revisado: 01-31-24
Descent is one of the few books that manage to humanize space marines, by following the story of Zahariel from boy to Order aspirant, to fully fledged space marine. The book leans hard into the "knights in space with guns" schtick, and captured the feeling of fantasy meets space opera that 40k should be all about. Armstrong's narration is theatrical in the best sense of the word - listening to Descent feels like watching a quality stageplay, the kind with elaborate sets and historical costumes.

Starts strong, ends weak
Revisado: 01-31-24
Abnett does some great worldbuilding, and sets up interesting characters - sadly, the story never really goes anywhere, and the metaplot - if you can call it that - seems ill thought out, especially for a "spy novel". Moment to moment however, it's an excellent book.

Historia
Each primarch is an exemplary being, derived from the Emperor’s own genetic stock to embody a facet of His personality. Their powers are unfathomable, but only one of them is the First. Lion El’Jonson is the paragon of what it is to be a primarch. His Legion, pre-eminent for most of their long history, typify the virtues of temperance, pride and martial excellency that the Lion embodies. They are the Emperor’s last line and final sanction. They are His Dark Angels.

Same old schlock that we're used to from BL, with a side order of "Dark Angels are the best ever!". Keeble's performance is fantastic as always.

Historia
The year is 2050. The power of magic and the creatures it brings have returned to the earth, and many of the ancient races have re-emerged. Elves, Orks, Mages, and lethal Dragons find a home in a world where mana, technology, and human flesh have melded into deadly urban predators. And the multinational mega-corporations that run the world hoard the only thing of real value - information. For Sam Verner, living in the womb of the Renraku conglomerate was easy, until his sister disappeared and the façade of the corporate reality began to disintegrate.

Solid cyberpunk story
Revisado: 08-22-23
Once you start with the Shadowrun books you'll get addicted, and this is the place to start. There's a lot going by quite fast though, and the story is definitely easier to follow if you're reading it than listening to it - only after hearing the book again a year after my first listen do I feel like I've got a clear grasp on the whole story. I'd still recommend picking up the audio version, as Tren Sparks does splendid character voices.

Generic action schlock
Revisado: 05-24-23
Five hours of space marines fighting orcs, interspersed with occasional psuedo-philosophical babble. While Jonathan Keeble knocks it out of the park in terms of narration, the actual story is mostly soulless and boring. It also somehow fails to feature Vulkan for most of the runtime.

Historia
The coldest shadows. Arcano-archaeologist Elijah knows that digging into the past can be its own reward - or peril. When he’s hired to find an ancient map purported to lead to a mysterious location at the bottom of the world, his professional curiosity is more than roused. But his quest to simply get his hands on the map is more dangerous than he expected - even for a shadowrunner. He and his own team of runners - including everything from a goblin rigger to a troll street samurai - follow a murky trail that takes them from the ruins of Chicago to the jungles of Amazonia.

Good story, lacklustre ending
Revisado: 02-27-23
It's an interesting action story that kept me both invested throughout and wanting to keep going whenever I had to put it down. That said, the ending felt pretty lacklustre and there were several plot threads that never really got resolved, or even explained. The book is worth a listen, but it feels like it could have used a couple more chapters. Trent Sparks has a great voice and does incredibly good character voices, but his descriptive narration can feel a little dry and disinterested at times.

Fantastic build-up, no payoff
Revisado: 02-15-22
Really enjoyed this up until the end. Feels like the writer was about to start on the final bit when he glanced at the clock and saw there was only five minutes left to finish the script. If we can get more audio drama that's a little longer and has enough space for a proper ending, I will be a happy man indeed.
