Not my favorite CoH

I love CoHo but this book wasn’t my favorite of hers. The story took a long time to actually start. I know CoHo is known for her twists but this book just seemed backwards. Also there was some serious “slut” shaming that was totally inappropriate. Won’t read again but I don’t regret the hours I spent listening

I almost never write reviews putting a book into the world is a huge deal and even if I don’t like it it’s still a big accomplishment. Although the first book in the series was a fun listen this book was just kinda… gross? I don’t mind steamy scenes but it started off with characters that literally do not talk, relationship is all but dead and the foundation to what they have left is sex. Cool- ok. But I couldn’t finish this book. There is a difference between talking dirty and bad dialogue and storytelling

Toxic masculinity

I never write reviews but this book was such a waste Ans cess pool I had to say something. This whole book was written through the male gaze. Female characters (that are supposedly heroines) are only valuable to male protagonists as sexual objects or trite plot developments for completely predicable story lines. I was insanely disappointed. I enjoyed the first book. I do not mind graphic senes either violent or sexual but this book had no nuance whatsoever and simply put in vulger detail for its own sake. It did not contribute to the story or further the plot in any meaningful way. The story had so much potential but the opportunity was squandered

lazy writing

RP1 is one of my all time favorite books. Like Wade I turned it into my Almanac and have the thing mostly memorized.

First, I feel bad for Ernest Cline. I can't imagine the pressure he is under from fans and his community to deliver a book as spectacular as RP1. I do not believe fans are entitled to anything let alone another masterpiece so quickly, however, this book had so much wasted potential! All the world building was set up in RP1 and the story had some place to go but the only thing I liked about this book was the amazing narration of the geek god Wil Wheaton. Frankly, the writing was lazy and unoriginal. It was like Mr. Cline just copy and pasted sentences from RP1 into a quasi new plot.

I didn't mind the "woke" aspect of the book as much as some other listeners. I think it could have been done more tastefully as part of the narrative in Wade's character development (or in the book's case lack there of) but it all seemed so forced.

The book was a slog to get through. I can't say if it's worth your time or money because everyone gets something different from the story. Needless to say I won't be leaving my quarter on the game in anticipation of a next listen or another book
