Historia
At work, we’re taught to lead the conversation. On social media, we shape our personal narratives. At parties, we talk over one another. So do our politicians. We’re not listening. And no one is listening to us. Despite living in a world where technology allows constant digital communication and opportunities to connect, it seems no one is really listening or even knows how. And it’s making us lonelier, more isolated, and less tolerant than ever before. A listener by trade, New York Times contributor Kate Murphy wanted to know how we got here.

Important insights
Revisado: 07-08-20
I was pleased with how insightful this book was about the value of listening. It had some helpful suggestions for how to be a better listener but largely indicates that there is no prescriptive solution for all cases. That said, the thesis is that everyone can become better with focus and attention.

Historia
Robert Iger became CEO of The Walt Disney Company in 2005, during a difficult time. Competition was more intense than ever, and technology was changing faster than at any time in the company’s history. His vision came down to three clear ideas: Recommit to the concept that quality matters, embrace technology instead of fighting it, and think bigger - think global - and turn Disney into a stronger brand in international markets.

Great story from a great storyteller
Revisado: 07-03-20
I picked this from a Bill Gates book list not knowing much about Bob Igor. I really enjoyed learning about his life through an engaging narrative. Along the way, he articulates many lessons in leadership and business (that he also conveniently summarizes at the end of the book).
One of the first things Bob discusses is his fondness for classic stories as a boy. I think this fed his ability to tell stories, which seems to be part of the core of his capacity to lead media businesses.
Bob seems very fair in the book about his own weaknesses and is frank but compassionate about others he talks about. It's hard not to like him after reading this.
Some of my favorite parts of the book are his stories about his relationship with Steve Jobs. They had such an intimate feel, especially his account of Steve's funeral. Although distinct, I enjoyed this memior similarly as I enjoyed Phil Knight's book, Shoe Dog.
I'm really happy I found this book.

Historia
On March 29, 1975, sisters Katherine and Sheila Lyons, ages 10 and 12, vanished from a shopping mall in suburban Washington, DC. As shock spread, then grief, a massive police effort found nothing. The investigation was shelved, and the mystery endured. Then, in 2013, a cold case squad detective found something he and a generation of detectives had missed. It pointed them toward a man named Lloyd Welch, then serving time for child molestation in Delaware.

Great narration
Revisado: 05-13-19
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I understand what some reviewers mean about the extreme repetition of story. I felt the same way but believe that was necessary to demonstrate how persistent the interrogators had to be in sifting through the inconsistent details of the story. Most ordinary people would have become frustrated and given up earlier. I thought this was a work of fiction until the end of the book when it became apparent this was real life. I preferred thinking it was fiction (to knowing people could be so deranged). As for ultimate guilt, it is unfortunate that many of the leads that were found later were not identified in time to make a more definitive case. In the end, it seems that more than a few people got away with a heinous crime.

Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie.

Chad Shank fekkin killed it
Revisado: 09-28-16
First off this is my dads account. Orman wont like this.
Digging Up Mother was a wonderful book, i took it with me into a chemical detox/psych hospital and had to tear the hardback cover off(listen to Dougs podcast 151 at 45:45).
I had a bad time coming off benzo downer anxiety meds in there but i made some friends including one of Roger Waters children who was kinda my rehab girlfriend as she said... We all loved reading passages from the book before she got bombarded by mentally ill(she was the only hot chick in the facility)
This audiobook let me relive my rehab experience thanks Doug! Dougs okay at reading but Shank killed it.
Way to go Chad Shank

Entertaining Performance, Outstanding Translation
Revisado: 08-31-16
Where does Les Misérables: Translated by Julie Rose rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The story is well known and one of my favorites. This is a must read novel. I especially appreciated the essay at the end of the audio book - it was a great way to "wind down" and contemplate what I had just experienced.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jean Valjean, of course. He was redeemed.
What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narration was phenomenal. The dramatic emphasis was entertaining and I never tired of listening to him, even after 60 hours.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Very touching in many places. This translation was noticeably more accessible and understandable than the free ebook version I read a few years ago.
Any additional comments?
After reading the unabridged version once in print and now a second time by audio, I would opt for an abridged version next time. The detail often interrupts the flow of the story taking you further away from the action than you want to be.

The author of Cod and The Basque History of the World takes an extraordinary look at an ordinary substance — salt, the only rock humans eat — and how it has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

What did you like best about Salt? What did you like least?
Interesting study but not 16 hours worth of interesting. This would be one to find in an abridged version. I identified with the review that suggested this may be better to read than to listen (although there is nothing to criticize in Scott Brick's performance).

So much of our human body is made up of salt that we'd be dead without it. The fine balance of nature, the trade of salt as a currency of many nations and empires, the theme of a popular Shakespearean play... Salt is best selling author Mark Kurlansky's story of the only rock we eat.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Absolutely Moving
Revisado: 11-20-09
This is one of the most impressive, moving stories of bravery, endurance and brotherhood I have ever experienced. Very aptly named as it is a story of unparalleled endurance through hardships and uncertainty. Moved me to tears as the story concluded. Similar to themes in Into Thin Air and Shadow Divers.
Narration was perfect: engaging, with emotion. Highly recommend.
