Dashiell Hammett was a crime writer who elevated the genre to true literature, and The Thin Man was Hammett’s last - and most successful - novel. Following the enormous success of The Thin Man movie in 1934, Hammett was commissioned to write stories for additional films. He wrote two full-length novellas for the films that became After the Thin Man and Another Thin Man.

The history was more interesting than the plots

The performances were a little annoying as others have noted, but I was able to follow the plot and enjoy the story. Unfortunately the plot line was far less interesting than the historic notes provided about Dashiell Hammett.

Struggled to finish - did not care for the characters, can you find enough reframing qualities in the first 1/3 of the book? if so then proceed, if not abandon. All the twists in the world cannot save these folks.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Both Gone Girl and The Good Girl share a pleasant G-G alliteration. In this regard, I suppose the comparison is apt. Without giving away plot - every trick Gone Girl used, Good Girl tries - but without the requisite sympathetic characters. Where Gone Girl leaves you haunted and wondering "what if?", Good Girl leave you scratching your head saying, "why did I ?"
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Lindy Nettleton (Eve Hoffman) does a detective Gabe Hoffman voice that is sure to drive you up a wall. I rip my headphones off every time she says a line as him. My wife thinks it's hilarious when I impersonate her.
Do you think The Good Girl needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
