Historia
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

There's so much I'd love to say about this book .. but without spoiling it . it's just impossible... and I think that, in and of itself, says what an interesting and good book this is. There aren't many books that I think about when I'm not reading/listening to them and am wanting to get back to, but this is definitely one of them!

Historia
Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

A Naive Account from a Reality TV Personality

It's clear why she wrote the book
Revisado: 02-18-25
The number of times that The city of Springfield, Insight Magazine, this person, that person (the same list of names) was called out throughout the book had to be one of the main reasons she did this. the lawsuit was dismissed and she's pissed. And I get that. I would be too. She mentions that people have said to her MANY times that "she's blaming the wrong people, it's your parent's fault"... well maybe she should listen to them because much of the blame does fall on them. BUT, having said that .. it brings up one of the most bewildering things about her book. She speaks about being traumatized... but NEVER in regards to what her brother did to her.. which I find bizarre. She speaks of being traumatized regarding the fact that the story of her brother abusing her and her sisters came out. And is so vague about it in fact, I was left feeling like when child services was called in to their lives, she wasn't honest with them about what Josh had done...but not sure?? But again, she NEVER talks about it in this book.. AT ALL.. and so many times I kept.. rewinding because things would end so abruptly that I thought I must have hit the "skip ahead" button.. but no.. she would bring up a subject and just STOP. it was strange. But this is just my opinion and if YOU, Jill Duggar, should happen to read this ... one thing I wholeheartedly agree with your therapist about is, don't worry about what other people think about you or what you're doing... especially strangers...like me 😉 (family's always harder to do that with)! as you get older, this will be easier to do!

So disappointing!
Revisado: 06-04-24
I have 2 hours left and I just don't think I'm going to make it. I'm not a huge fan of this narrator, but that combined with the idiocy of these women especially the main protagonist, it's PAINFUL.....so PAINFUL.
The story had such potential...and I don't understand why the women were written as weak, lame brained, WHIIIIIINNNNEEEEEERS. It just didn't have to be...

The characters were great..well developed and likeable. It was fast paced and never droned on and on about anything. It truly was the perfect amount of time with each character, then switched.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

A really fascinating book
Revisado: 03-28-24
a fascinating book for characters that are complete assholes. If you can get past that, AND get past the very inaccurate way the police protocols were described. it was fast paced and I think that is what not just saves this book but makes it actually enjoyable. it constantly goes back and forth between 2 characters and rarely goes off track from what is actually happening in the moment.
