This story is a window into where America may be heading if we do not turn away from socialism and governmental control of all aspects of our lives.

Historia
On December 16, 1944, Hitler launched his "last gamble" in the snow-covered forests and gorges of the Ardennes in Belgium, believing he could split the Allies by driving all the way to Antwerp and forcing the Canadians and the British out of the war. Although his generals were doubtful of success, younger officers and NCOs were desperate to believe that their homes and families could be saved from the vengeful Red Army approaching from the east. Many were exultant at the prospect of striking back.

Balanced perspectives on a complicated and sweeping campaign.
Revisado: 03-04-24
New information (to me) which provides a balanced view on the entire battle. The insights and unvarnished viewpoints on the various leaders puts them on a more human footing. The plight of civilians caught up in the battle is poignantly presented.

This book is a new perspective on “known” events. Martin pulls together the disparate elements of the War to form a coherent narrative. I learned things I had heretofore not know and it enhanced my understanding of the whole.

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex, Alfred's kingdom and the last territory in English hands, Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane.

Interesting insight into a little understood period of English history

The Viking occupation and near conquest of England is an interesting and bloody story of the beginnings of English national character. #voicesfromthegrave,#mythologyinspired, #clever,#violent,#paganenglandtimes, tagsgiving,#sweepstakes

The Crusades is an authoritative, accessible single-volume history of the brutal struggle for the Holy Land in the Middle Ages. Thomas Asbridge - a renowned historian who writes with "maximum vividness" (Joan Acocella, The New Yorker) - covers the years 1095 to 1291 in this big, ambitious, listenable account of one of the most fascinating periods in history.

A comprehensive window into the past
Revisado: 08-06-18
This book takes the listener back in time to the period of the great Crusades into the Holy land. Told from both sides of the story, it links these events into todays chaotic Middle East, and gives perspective into one of the basic causes for the Protestant Reformation a few centuries later. Derek Perkins handles the Arabic names with ease and his delivery is first rate. Of particular interest to me was the telling of the story of the Mongol invasion and how they were blunted by the Muslim world in the Middle East.
All in all a great listen for those who want to get deep into this topic to understand its causes and effects.

Interesting historical perspectives on how many things in todays world got to where they are from the past.
Any additional comments?
This book is for anyone interested in British empire building and how it was maintained and finally lost. It brings people like Drake and Nelson into sharp contrast in view of their times and deeds. It puts into context the drivers of British actions of the 17th-20th centuries like now other reference I have read.

Historia
Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

Outstanding perspective from someone who was there
Revisado: 03-28-17
What made the experience of listening to The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich the most enjoyable?
While much has been written and said about this seminal event of the 20th century, much has been done through the looking glass of time. Shirer's perspective is recent and authentic. his ability to interject some human personality into the narrative adds to its ring of authenticity, and his exhaustive research brings much of what was learned at Nuremberg into perspective.
What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?
Steady performance told with appropriate emphasis and emotion.
