It achieved its purpose... To inspire!
Revisado: 01-04-22
I write this review as someone who has studied several languages and who has built many memory palaces for my own learning in science, math, language, work, finance, etc. In other words, I am not coming to this book as someone new to the ideas or concepts. Much as a professional athlete loves to read books by other great athletes, anyone who loves the art of learning and especially learning languages, will appreciate the thought, organization, encouragement and nuggets of wisdom hidden throughout this book.
When an author really cares about his subject and his readers, it comes through. Metivier is one of these people. There is a way in which he words things that is always encouraging, always kind, and transparent.
As far as the criticism which I read in other reviews that there were many advertisements, that is not the case. There are two sections where he mentions that you can go deeper on topics that are not covered expressly in this book on his website. He spends more time pointing you to other people and resources than he does to his own materials.
In this day of content creation, that is more than forgivable.
I walked away inspired in several ways after reading/listening to this book:
1. I was inspired to really dig into Italian, which I have been somewhat hesitant to return to after several years.
2. I also found application to another area of my work life, where I trade futures for a living. There is a quote about failing in a public way that inspired me to face fears and really go for it this year.
3. I determined to implement fun and discipline into my learning projects with much greater zeal, starting immediately.
There are plenty of language books and memory books I have read which possessed more technical advice and materials, including several of Metivier's own works. This book clearly had a different purpose. It was to inspire. In achieving that aim, I give it 5 stars.
Good job Dr. Metivier,
Mike

Best place to begin your language learning
Revisado: 07-04-18
The author is clear that this is a book to give you the building blocks of vocabulary. Consider this the first and most essential step to learning a language, which will save you countless hours in the long run. By taking a little up front time to set up some memory palaces, using the clear descriptions in this book, the rest of vocabulary learning becomes like a fun game that you can play. It takes the work out of the worst part of language learning, getting the vocab to stick! Because of this approach, I went from struggling with one language, to now working on three simultaneously, and have plans for more in the years to come. Save yourself the struggle and just follow the path explained here.
Of the author's titles, this is my favorite for its hands on explanation and for the bonus interviews and conversations included.
Best wishes on your language learning!

Life altering book & top narrator, but poor audio
Revisado: 05-25-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
As has been written below, there is an audio echo that is at first unbelievably annoying. However, the other audible options for this book are less satisfactory because the narrator is not as skilled at catching inflections and representing the phrasing, pausing, sarcasm, etc. If you set your eq settings on iPod to spoken word or to small speakers, it seems to minimize the background and, eventually, it blends away so that you can practically dismiss it.I will and have recommended this book to close friends and employees because it gives insights that every business person needs. Often, it articulates pain we have experienced without knowing the words to put to it. This is one of those books English teachers make you read in college, but you cannot experience it until you struggle for a living! Now, I would say, it is required reading for any person wishing to make something of themselves in this world. Because of that, it is worth bearing through the audio echo if audio is the only way you can fit in this 1000 page book.Happy listening.
What three words best describe Christopher Hurt’s performance?
Kind, memorable, complete
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book - whether you listen to it or read it - instigates a coming of age in your mind to understand the things you feel around you in government, education, and even large business bureaucracies.
It is like Ayn Rand puts words to the pain and angst, and you finally know your enemies and your friends.
It is required reading to be successful in the business world.
