Good but too short
Revisado: 03-06-25
I enjoyed this book. Many call it filler and I can get what they mean, but I personally love the overlord series so much that filler is enjoyable for me. My one major critique is that it’s really quite short.

Engaging coming of age story
Revisado: 01-29-23
Krueger does a great job telling the story of one young man coming of age during the depression. He weaves together history with fiction to build a world that 12-year-old Odie inhabits. The characters are vivid and flawed. We see that every life has a story that brought the person to where they are now. The tale is clean enough for young readers, but more mature audiences understand nuanced explanations of situations. Odie and his companions meet an assortment of characters along their journey. And, although the ending is happy, the readers are reminded that, in life, there is never a “happily ever after”. Life continues beyond the ending of one story.

Historia
In this quirky debut novel from author Matthew Dicks, career criminal Martin uses his OCD to pilfer items from his victims' houses without being discovered. It helps that he only takes things the homeowner would never notice are missing - like a roll of toilet paper or a bottle of maple syrup. Martin has spent so much time snooping through homes he feels like he knows the owners, but when he starts meddling in their personal lives, his precise world turns to haos.

Wonderful, quirky storyline
Revisado: 01-17-23
This book is a refreshing twist on standard crime novels. The main character is a criminal, but he’s lovable. Follow along with Martin as he stalks couples and robs from them, only to turn around and save the day multiple times.

Historia
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

A look at eviction without judgement
Revisado: 09-05-22
The perspective of this book is new. Rather than telling the story by having victims and villains, the author just tells the story. No judgement is made regarding the events. Readers are allowed to come to their own conclusions. Hardships of those being evicted are shown without making these people look like innocent individuals who have done nothing to be evicted. Landlords are shown as they make decisions without placing them in the role of villain. The stories are simply told as they happened. Additional research and data is given to readers to help us better understand the complexities of the housing crisis, but we are never told what to think about any given situation. This book is hard because it is raw and emotional, but it will expand your understanding and empathy towards all involved in the housing crisis.

Why Gender Matters

Historia
Back in 2005, the first edition of Why Gender Matters broke ground in illuminating the differences between boys and girls—how they perceive the world differently, how they learn differently, how they process emotions and take risks differently. Dr. Sax argued that in failing to recognize these hardwired differences between boys and girls, we ended up reinforcing damaging stereotypes, medicalizing misbehavior, and failing to help kids to reach their full potential.

Politically neutral stance that focuses on science
Revisado: 04-25-22
Dr. Sax takes a careful look at the science surrounding gender. Rather than simply following one political viewpoint or another, he focuses on what studies reveal about gender in children. As we learn more about how boys and girls differ, parents and teachers can do a better job providing children with the instruction that works best for them. Dr. Sax clearly acknowledges what is working and not working in society, especially regarding discussions on gender, then provides clear advice for what needs to change and what trends should stay the course.
If you work closely with children in any way, this book will give you insight on ways you can change to help them learn. The studies are fascinating and the examples help illustrate what the science means. While I don’t agree with everything in this book (and Dr. Sax clearly distinguishes his opinions from the science), I did find the science fascinating and appreciate the suggestions Dr. Sax makes. And in the areas where I disagreed, the information from this book provided a place to begin forming my own opinions for strategies.

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

Interesting take on one portion of American history
Revisado: 04-21-22
This book is a fascinating exploration of what the birth of America might have been like for one of the many women involved. Many books are written about the Founding Fathers, but few explore the challenges faced by the wives. While this book is a work of fiction, the authors have attempted to be as historically accurate as possible while enhancing the personalities and characters of the people who lived and loved during the American Revolution and years that followed. The story unfolds from Eliza’s perspective. We travel through major historical events, political upheaval, and personal tragedies. The story shows the differing political ideals that existed at the time and moves those ideals beyond bland summary and into personalities of people (as it would have been if we’d lived at that time).
Dray and Kamoie have written a historical fiction that wrestles with the complexities of relationships, politics, love, and what it means to be American.

Fun adventure with deeper meaning
Revisado: 04-17-22
On the surface, this book is a fun adventure of three children experiencing life with a genie. As the book moves through its plot, the main character learns more about herself, her family, her friends, and her society. She discovers who she really is and sacrifices her own desires to improve the life of her friend. Because there are many layers to the book, it can be enjoined as a surface-level reading where children enjoy the adventure and the moral of being a good friend. However, the themes of the book run much deeper and provide the opportunity to read for a more complex critique of life, society, education, and family. Listen as a family, then spend time taking about the various issues brought up in the book and see where the discussion leads you!

Historia
The Alt Apocalypse is the ground-breaking, genre-bending series from Tom Abrahams. It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliff-hangers). This series, which can be listened to in any order, features the same core characters in each complete story. But every book dunks them into a new, alternate apocalypse; a nuclear holocaust, an earthquake, a flood, a wildfire, a hurricane, a plague, and even zombies.

Great twist on dystopian genre
Revisado: 03-27-22
This series is a great way to explore the “what ifs” of the apocalypse. Each book follows the same characters as they navigate a different world-ending catastrophe. In true Abrams’ fashion, the characters are robust, realistic, and adaptable. Readers are taken on journey after journey through a variety of iterations, with all paths connecting at the end. If you love dystopias, you’ll love this series!
