"He is male and i am female, and although of course that should not matter, i can look into the future sufficiently to know that the story a woman tells may be lost over time. For it really does matter who's narrating the story...."

Historia
Eugene Bullard lived one of the most fascinating lives of the 20th century. The son of a former slave and an indigenous Creek woman, Bullard fled home at the age of 11 to escape the racial hostility of his Georgia community. When his journey led him to Europe, he garnered worldwide fame as a boxer, and later as the first African-American fighter pilot in history. After the war, Bullard returned to Paris a celebrated hero. But little did he know that the dramatic, globe-spanning arc of his life had just begun.

This book was phenomenal. New favourite for the year I think.
I loved the way it was researched, giving good amounts of detail about all the people Eugene came into contact with, I feel this added a real depth of insight into the story and the scope of life it was trying to encapsulate.

Historia
The laugh-out-loud, reach-for-your-hanky story of one of Australia's best-loved comedians. Anh Do nearly didn't make it to Australia. His entire family came close to losing their lives on the sea as they escaped from war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat. But nothing - not murderous pirates nor the imminent threat of death by hunger, disease or dehydration as they drifted for days - could quench their desire to make a better life in a country where freedom existed.

I must admit that I have a thing that when I do non fiction I have to do it in one sitting; this book I finished in one day in between uni classes.
Anh makes me enthused to continue perusing performance, even though I'm doing a degree I don't want a job in.
God bless Anh Do and your family <3 May you all keep laughing and loving.

I legit flew through this book; 2 days and done!
Revisado: 01-11-20
A little bit of gush, and then I am going to get into the meat of my thoughts. I loved this so much. I loved Citra and Rowan were two of the coolest kids and I do indeed ship (and as we know, I'm not much of a romantic unless they are well suited). I do think that I could have gotten more into Rowans head as he was changing, but maybe I just phased out while that was happening. This book had me yelling very loudly into the nowhere (startling my family so much). All of the characters felt very...colourful, and I liked their unique voices. Finding that again we had common motivating drivers even when death should not be a factor. Drives like family, publicity, power, legacy, moral ground and even still reaping of loved ones playing as the hot poker behind every characters back. More meaty thoughts. As I'm a very strong christian I was incredibly intrigued to see what this book was going to do with the idea of facing the fact of death; when, there is no assumed death at the end of a persons life. What did Shusterman consider about these scary truths when putting them in a world where it can be mere philosophy instead of terminal fate. Of course, I do wondered that in this world they still must technically consider death as a thing, as a fool hardy twelvie contemplates death or how long a piece of string is. It said that you had a 50% chance of living to 400 years or something (as I'm listening to the audio it's a little hard to go back and find the stat they said). But with that in mind, seeing the way the Scythes themselves deal with the idea of death was kind of fascinating. I especially loved the journal entries at the ends of the chapters. Often when books have vague *insightful* journal entries I REALLY hate them; but these, instead, were an amazing mapping of where the book was and where we were headed through the minds of Scythes past (and present). I will note, that like all good trilogies it seems to finish the first book in a satisfying way that if you wanted to stop now and not commit to all three books, than you could, and I like that. I will be continuing, but I'm excitedly hoping that it could be building up for an epic use of my favourite story telling method; that of the well executed (no pun intended) trilogy. Anyway, onto the next! SPOILERRRR SPOILLLERRR I was so mad that I stopped listening for a few hours after Scythe Faraday died; but now I almost feel a little betrayed that he is alive: THATS NOT KEEPING YOUR "kill the mentor" TROPE!

This book was a ride, and I loved it! I feel like Kora and Nova were a little weird to add in somehow, but at the same time I guess it brought things full circle.
OKAYY: SO SPOILERSSS BELOW!
***SPOILERRRRSS***
Yeah lol to start, I'm in pessimistic final-exams mode: so, we're going to begin with the bit that feels a little rouge cause thats whats on my brain and then move onto the GOOD STUFFF!!
I'm not sure about Kora and Nova. I was very invested in them, and you start to wonder how they fit together, but some of it felt just a little...convenient. Also the adding of lots of worlds I am in two minds about, on the negative (cause that's what I'm about) it's a little out of the blue...(no pun intended), and maybe it's just been too long since I have read Strange, maybe other worlds were hinted at A LOT more (excluding the giants and angels tales). On the other hand, that's kinda cool ^-^ I love me connected worlds #thelongearthteam.
I also feel like Mr Pretty-boi, Thyon, came around much quicker than he should have. I will admit that he was having his butt kicked into shape, and dire situations are much more likely to make people change...but even so I feel like it's a liiitttle speedy 180 degree turn.
OKAY!! So now the fun stuff.
Let's just start with saying HECKERS Lani Taylor writes with pretty words. It almost feels like you're reading poetry half the time, but not in a magniliquent, flowery way. Just a way that opens your eyes to what the characters are experiencing. Very show don't tell (which, as a prodigy writer, I appreciate). All her characters have well filled in gaps, and they feel like they all have very unique voices and clashing-ish culture that come through.
I am not a massive romantic, BUT I WOULD KILL for Sarai and Lazlo. #yustheteam. They are one of my favourite ships ever,
かわいい!!! Minya, I loved getting to know her more, and seeing her grow is awesome. Don't get me started on how much the Godslayer and his wife made me choke up with "aww".
I'm going to cut things short cause my phone keyboard is being a menace and keeps trying to randomly correct words to stupid things.
But on a finishing note (There is goes! Tired to correct 'note' to 'more' for NO REASON)
This book carried through beautiful feels, I will admit that still a tiny piece if me in not satisfied, and if this is a trilogy (Which at first I thought it was)--then this is not how a trilogy arch flows. But I guess this just means that it's more than a trilogy YAY!
Unless, this is actually the end of these guys stories, which I wouldn't mind just so long as we see more in this world.
#allaboutmultiplestoriesinoneworld!! #diskworldyesboi
