So relieved that the new narrator is as wonderful as Lisette Lacat!
Excellent in every way. She has a very soothing delivery.

I very much enjoyed this book and the sterling performance by its author.
Highly recommended to anyone who likes their sf/fantasy with a good dollop of very engaging humor.

A switch to memory & mysticism for Craig Johnson, this is really delightful. There are always elements like that in these books , but this time there is no real mystery to solve. I loved it!

I liked this book for the first third or so. The main character seemed like a one-note song, but I was hopeful. However, the one note never changed, except to turn into a very sour chord. The protagonist's character got more and more reprehensible as he became more and more invincible. Also, initially this book seemed to be a parable about the strength and resilience of the downtrodden in the midst of a strict caste-based society. But then this proto-democrat did all he could to preserve a monarchy.

I was glad to reach the end.

However, the narration was first-rate! The narrator managed to pronounce so many African words with what sounded like authenticity. And he managed to distinguish numerous difference accented voices, which must have been a huge challenge.

This wonderful book by Andy Weir, following on the disappointing Artemis, is simply excellent.
The narrator/main character is essentially the same man as the main character in Mars.
But he is such an appealing guy you won't mind that. The narration is perfect, the story is engaging, and the stakes couldn't be any higher. Altogether this is a very enjoyable book!

The text of this book is delightful. The narration is good.
But - the audio production is pretty terrible.
Seldom have I had cause to complain about the quality of books from Audible, but this one is quite bad.
I guess it was recorded quite a while ago, which might explain the poor production values.
But it is fun to listen to anyway!

These are complex books that center around a story begun three books before this one. The first three volumes were narrated very ably by David DeVries. I would think that a new narrator would listen to at lease some of the preceding books in order to get a sense of how the action flows, who the people are, etc. I am not sure that happened with this narrator.

This narrator does things that call attention to the narration rather than the narrative. His delivery is overly dramatic. Additionally, what really bugs me is his mispronunciation of ordinary words. For example the word "learned" can be a verb about having gained some knowledge in the past. Or it can be an adjective. These two words are pronounced differently. Also the word "wolf" is not to be confused with the word "wuff", whatever that is. And then there is his pronunciation of "circumfix".

However, I do enjoy listening to the audiobooks because I have read the books and it is good to go back and revisit the action at an 'audible' pace. So - recommended with complaints.

These books get under my skin like just about nothing else. I have read them all, and listened to the first three on Audible. These audiobooks are truly amazing. It can't be easy reading such dense material and pronouncing such unusual names, so kudos to David DeVries! And kudos of course also to R. Scatt Bakker.

This is the third book of the initial trilogy covering the arrival of a prophet in the fictional land of Earwa. These books feature magic, war, religion, sex and numerous complicated relationships. If you are interested in reading about a complex universe with these trappings, these books are for you.

Caution - this review contains spoliers!

Shots are fired, both at our intrepid hero Joe Pickett and the local judge. Threats are made against Joe's friend and superman, Nate. The threat against Nate is conveyed by one of the victims from the cartel shoot-up in the last book (which was quite good!). Why does that guy, who is an complete asshole, warn Nate? No idea. Nate tells Joe, and so what do they do about it? Not much. They assume that the person who took a shot at the judge (but hitting his wife instead) was from the cartel. They find the site where the shooter took the shot. They tell the sheriff, who is even more of an idiot than most authorities in these books tend to be, so he of course takes it in the wrong direction, arresting Nate.

Why?

WELL - the REAL shooter plants the weapon in Nate's property and calls the sheriff's department anonymously. Okay .. maybe that makes sense, but why did he take the shot in the first place? He is the local doctor! He is a Bad Doctor! He was doing it to help the county prosecutor, who was in love with the judge's wife! He meant to kill the judge! But he made sure the wife didn't survive! He is a Bad Man! But why did he try to shoot the judge again? WHAT??? He is also a drug dealer, which gives this mess of a book a pretext for the arrival of the odious mother-in-law of Joe Pickett. I guess she has to appear in every book just to make us all glad we don't know anyone like her. But she is just way too much over the top.

In the meantime, the cartel hitman turns out to be a cartel kidnapper, and he for some reason contacts Nate's defense team to tell them he saw someone in a county vehicle plant the gun while Nate was away. Wait - what? Why would he do that? He even talks to them. Riiiiight. He is a cartel hitman, but also, really, a good citizen. He does kidnap Nate's wife and baby, but he is super nice about it. Then Nate breaks out of jail and tracks the bad guy down - amazing how lucky Nate is to have such contacts! Oh - and how does Nate know that something is amiss while he is languishing in jail? One of his birds flies from his ranch outside of town smack dab into the jailhouse door ... to ... wait for it ...

to WARN HIM!

Yes! Supernatural magical telepathic birds!

In the mean meantime, the doctor somehow figures out that they might be coming for him, because Joe has gotten a regular Perry Mason summary confession from the county prosecutor. Why does the prosecutor admit all that? Oh you know - for NO REASON! But the doctor absconds, and Joe and his fellow game wardens track him down and manage to shoot him, even though he is a long range marksman. And Joe gets shot but he survives, but Nate has to go underground because he ripped off the sheriff's ear.

Pointless sections abound. Many pages about a grizzly bear and yet another self-important jerk. A whole long chapter of Joe talking with some super annoying movie producer. Long chapters of the doctor's girlfriend mulling things over. All the tedious repetitive pages with Joe's mother-in-law.

So many jerks in these books. I don't think I know that many people who are both jerks and very stupid. Maybe I am just lucky.

Great story, wonderful characters, stirring images, and penetrating insights into human nature - these all abound here. Highly recommended.
