Historia
Fans fell in love with Eliza Hamilton - Alexander Hamilton’s devoted wife - in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s phenomenal musical Hamilton. But they don’t know her full story. A strong pioneer woman, a loving sister, a caring mother, and, in her later years, a generous philanthropist, Eliza had many sides - and this fascinating biography brings her multifaceted personality to vivid life.

Beautiful Story from a New Perspective
Revisado: 05-28-21
This is an old story told from a new and exciting perspective. I am such a fan of the emergence of female voices in historical non-fiction. It was a delight to learn about Eliza Schuyler through her lens, not as her husband's partner. I realized in the middle of reading this that I read a book by the author last year and enjoyed is equally as much.

Historia
Throughout history, food has acted as a catalyst of social change, political organization, geopolitical competition, industrial development, military conflict, and economic expansion. An Edible History of Humanity is a pithy, entertaining account of how a series of changes---caused, enabled, or influenced by food---has helped to shape and transform societies around the world.

A Serious Topic Narrated by Bilbo Baggins
Revisado: 05-28-21
I love a good deep dive into a topic like this and "6 Glasses" is one of my all-time favorites, but the narrator really does this work and the subject matter a disservice. It's a non-fiction book; we don't need voices. His narration included really bad impressions of Europeans and Asians. Really bad. Really offensive. Really dumb. I recommend the print version.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

This is a rich and beautiful story. I've read a few of her books and this one stacks up to EPL and, my favorite, The Last American Man. it's entertaining and well-crafted.

Twenty-five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other televangelists first spoke of the United States being a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedoms and our way of life.

I can't believe how much the author forsaw. amazing foresight and analysis! when I picked up this book years ago, I thought the author was a crackpot. Now it's easy to see and frighteningly true.

Historia
In 1918, after four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Three years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel is tending the grave of her newly lost infant when she hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up on shore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Right, Wrong and the Chasm Between
Revisado: 04-20-16
Would you listen to The Light Between Oceans again? Why?
It was a beautiful story. I enjoyed it twice. After I enjoyed it the first time, I was able to savor the storytelling the second time.
What other book might you compare The Light Between Oceans to and why?
I've heard a comparison to All the Light We Cannot See, but I didn't enjoy that book, so it doesn't seem like a fair comparison to me.
What about Noah Taylor’s performance did you like?
The narrative was fantastic!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
At it's core, this book is about right versus wrong. The way it unfolds is compelling.

Historia
We live in a world of seeds. From our morning toast to the cotton in our clothes, they are quite literally the stuff and staff of life, supporting diets, economies, and civilizations around the globe. Just as the search for nutmeg and the humble peppercorn drove the Age of Discovery, so did coffee beans help fuel the Enlightenment and cottonseed help spark the Industrial Revolution. And from the fall of Rome to the Arab Spring, the fate of nations continues to hinge on the seeds of a Middle Eastern grass known as wheat.

Delightfully simplistic!
Revisado: 03-30-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book looks at the history and evolution of seeds. That's it. Thor Hanson's appreciation of seeds and his passion for study are evident, yet he presented the topic in a lighthearted way that was easy for a layman to follow. I enjoyed this book very much.
What other book might you compare The Triumph of Seeds to and why?
I love books that have a small scope, but enlighten me in a big way. This book reminds me of "A History of the World in 6 Glasses" by Tom Standage, which I read a decade ago, but still keep on my desk.
What about Marc Vietor’s performance did you like?
I thought the content and the narrator were perfectly matched. Marc Vietor did excellent work of bringing this book to life.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have enjoyed listening to this in one sitting. I didn't, but I did listen to it while I walked, shopped, cooked and washed dishes.
Any additional comments?
I didn't know much or care much about seeds when I started this book. I can now confidently speak about seeds because I've enjoyed this wonderful lesson and learned a lot without being lectured to.

Historia
Writer John Howard Griffin (1920-1980) decided to perform an experiment in order to learn from the inside out how one race could withstand the second class citizenship imposed on it by another race. Through medication, he dyed his skin dark and left his family and home in Texas to find out.

Faith that the dark past has taught us
Revisado: 03-30-16
What made the experience of listening to Black Like Me the most enjoyable?
Can a man who presented himself to the world as a black man for only six weeks really understand what it means to be a black man in America in 1958? Probably not, but it was an interesting study and a fascinating journey of discovery. Some of the author's observations still ring true today and his insights helped him become a nationally-recognized ally and a civil rights activist.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that the author re-released the book decades later, including information about how the book impacted his community, his career and the country.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Ray Childs?
There were a few times when the narrator went too far when attempting to replicate old Negro dialects. I'm not sure if I'd enjoy that kind of narration in a more contemporary piece.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The author's life and perspectives were changes as a result of this project. That was evident in the words.

Historia
Nearly a half century into being a feminist and legal pioneer, something funny happened to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The octogenarian won the Internet. Across America, people who weren't even born when Ginsburg made her name are tattooing themselves with her face, setting her famously searing dissents to music, and making viral videos in tribute.

Pour one out for your homie
Revisado: 12-31-15
What did you like best about this story?
It's a great biography. There's criticism about it and about the moniker that seems to poke fun at Ginsberg, but that name and this book are meant to praise her. If a cult movement brings attention to her impact on the landscape of this country, I say pour one for my homie and read this book.
Which scene was your favorite?
I didn't know much about RBG before her appointment to the Supreme Court, so I enjoyed learning about the early stuff. She is and was a superwoman.

Lean in and pour me a glass of wine
Revisado: 12-31-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Year of Yes to be better than the print version?
Listening to Shonda Rhimes reading her own story is like hanging out with her. There is no I'm-so-awesome-because-I'm-God's-special-creature. There is no Everything-I-ever-did-was-a-huge-success-because-failure-is-for-losers. There is no Lean-in-and-success-will-fall-into-your-lap. This book is the reals, ya'll.
What did you like best about this story?
I know Shonda Rhimes is an excellent screenwriter; we all know. Being a fantastic writer in one area, doesn't make you a fantastic writer in another area anymore than being a great cardiologist makes you a great obstetrician. In in most accounts, attempts at writing in other areas -- especially biographies -- makes otherwise successful writers seem self-aggrandizing and annoying. But this book was like drinking wine while sitting on the carpet listening to your best friend, Shonda. She is funny, witty, honest and all folded up in her own truth.

Historia
Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place. Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes.

The quiet stories are the most delicate
Revisado: 08-18-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves small, quiet stories. This was written by a man who appreciates the literature of words and moments and gestures. It's a beautiful story.
What other book might you compare The Slow Regard of Silent Things to and why?
I would compare this story to The Book Thief. In the storm of great things done by large people, the introverts are under constant threat of losing their way. Auri is both the champion and the hero of her own little story.
Which scene was your favorite?
When Auri goes underwater to retrieve things that aren't in their rightful place, my heart melts for her kindness and sense of order.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wasn't able to listen to this in one sitting, so I listened to it twice.
Any additional comments?
I was a fan of Auri when she was an insignificant character in the Kingkiller Chronicles. I really appreciated diving into her small world. She is a lovely and complex character.
