A masterpiece that hooked me deeply
Revisado: 03-07-19
Narrated exquisitely and penned with such deft the work whispers with Proustian genius - an extraordinary achievement for this type of book. I cannot thank the writer/narrator and creative team enough for such a moving, troubling, unsettling, remarkable, shocking, and, at times, inscrutable audio experience.

Historia
Through Euclid's Window Leonard Mlodinow brilliantly and delightfully leads us on a journey through five revolutions in geometry, from the Greek concept of parallel lines to the latest notions of hyperspace. Here is an altogether new, refreshing, alternative history of math revealing how simple questions anyone might ask about space -- in the living room or in some other galaxy -- have been the hidden engine of the highest achievements in science and technology.

Excellent for high-school kids
Revisado: 02-05-19
Extremely typical math-related book. Writing style is very basic, sterile, and likely geared toward those who listen to few, if any, books relating to historical math. Narration is simply awful due to his condescending tone at times which would likely work perfectly fine in a classroom setting.
As I stated in the headline- GREAT for kids and total noobs. If you've been around math history books for any length of time I'd recommend not wasting your time on this one. Nothing new is presented and the subject matter is rehash.

Does time exist? What is infinity? Why do mirrors reverse left and right but not up and down? In this scintillating collection, Holt explores the human mind, the cosmos, and the thinkers who’ve tried to encompass the latter with the former. With his trademark clarity and humor, Holt probes the mysteries of quantum mechanics, the quest for the foundations of mathematics, and the nature of logic and truth. Along the way, he offers intimate biographical sketches of celebrated and neglected thinkers, from the physicist Emmy Noether to the computing pioneer Alan Turing and the discoverer of fractals, Benoit Mandelbrot.

No excursion to any edge really...
Revisado: 12-11-18
As my headline suggests Holt doesn't play near any edges in spite of his book title. If the reader is new to math/physics-oriented books then, sure, they will likely be intellectually titillated. If you've been around the block several times with this particular subject the authors tend to reflect similar stories, themes, and characters with predictability.
Not a total waste of time since the author manages to slip in the occasional anecdote or erudite thought that sufficiently brings a touch of soul to an otherwise bland and meaningless book.
The narrator did a fine job. No issue there.

Drawing on rarely consulted archives, Crews shows us a man who blundered tragicomically in his dealings with patients, who never produced a corroborated cure, who promoted cocaine in one decade and was deluded by it in the next, who misunderstood the psychological controversies of the era, and who advanced his career through falsifying case histories and betraying the mentors who had helped him to rise.

Crews is nit-picky at times and overly-judgmental for my Libertarian tastes but the overall scope of the work sings with distinction and performs its deed perfectly which is ending a myth with style, finesse, and factual material mined from a trove of correspondence.

Historia
In Everything Trump Touches Dies, political campaign strategist and commentator Rick Wilson brings his darkly funny humor and biting analysis to the absurdity of American politics in the age of Trump. Wilson mercilessly exposes the damage Trump has done to the country, to the Republican Party he served for decades, and to the conservative movement that has abandoned its principles for the worst president in American history. No left-winger, Wilson is a lifelong conservative who delivers his withering critique of Trump from the right.

Like watching to a building burn to the ground...
Revisado: 08-21-18
Sad, but wholly entertaining. I'm talking about the author not his subject.
The arrogant and self-swollen elitist who wrote and narrated this possesses such an acerbic and advanced level of hatred that his expression thereof easily eclipses Trump's sins.
However, I'm fair, I found the author so jaded beyond the pale and so infected with unadulterated contempt for another human being that I'm forced to give three stars across the board for his throwing it all into the bucket for all to hear and see.
If you like Trump or are merely neutral like me this is probably worth a listen to and maybe not only be entertained but feel a bit of true-to-life unease that proudly-vicious individuals such as this guy are part of the political industry of picking and choosing who 'rules' over the rest of us.
Fascinating. Pretty sure if you aren't in the CNN/Never-Trump/Democratic Socialist camp you'll come away possibly vindicated which is likely going to leave the author even more angry and frustrated. Maybe the next book will reflect this? Can only hope. I'll throw money at that one for sure if so.

Historia
In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter Gray argues that our children, if free to pursue their own interests through play, will not only learn all they need to know but will do so with energy and passion. Children come into this world burning to learn, equipped with the curiosity, playfulness, and sociability to direct their own education. Yet we have squelched such instincts in a school model originally developed to indoctrinate, not to promote intellectual growth.

Rehashed and unoriginal progressive themes
Revisado: 07-10-18
Strikes a worn-out progressive stance replete with what is becoming repetitive to these types of education-centered tomes... hearkening back to the perceived benefits of hunter-gatherer tribes.
One can't read or listen to alternative education material without being subjected to the same old tribalism trope where these magical, playful, historical kids had seemingly better lives when their parents lived hand to mouth barely subsisting in the hard bushes somewhere.
The author's approach also takes on a Marxist sheen when one hears his obvious disdain for private property rights and the horrors of modern agriculture and the terrors this monster unleashed on little kids which hardly offers evidence for what ails modern education.

The invention of numerals is perhaps the greatest abstraction the human mind has ever created. Virtually everything in our lives is digital, numerical, or quantified. The story of how and where we got these numerals, which we so depend on, has for thousands of years been shrouded in mystery. Finding Zero is an adventure-filled saga of Amir Aczel's lifelong obsession: to find the original sources of our numerals.

Historia
In what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels, Charles Bukowski details the long, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years, and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol, women, and the Los Angeles Public Library's collection of D. H. Lawrence, Ham on Rye offers a crude, brutal, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast's coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression.
