What to know before you go
Revisado: 01-21-23
This is not a travel guide, but a fascinating look at how tourism affects Iceland. It gives insight into how tourists can be welcome guests and how they can annoy Icelanders beyond all patience. It also gives some information on modern (2019) Iceland financial shifts and how it affects everyday people. It gives great websites and resources for safe travel. It manages to be funny and very informative. Well done.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Magical
Revisado: 03-07-22
This book is strange, haunting. It’s told by a narrator who seems unreliable. It’s more a long mood poem than a narrative, though there is a story to watch unfold. Ultimately lovely, still strange but gentle and kind. It is the most unusual story I’ve read. (The audio narrator does a brilliant job, and brings dignity and curiosity to the voice of the narrator.) Enjoy!

Historia
Their union became pivotal in Irin history, but to understand Damien and Sari's ending, you must go back to their beginning. Four hundred years ago, a young singer and a hardened warrior met and loved each other, but their life was torn apart by violence. But no matter how much pain and anger stain their lives, bonds in the Irin race cannot be abandoned. Damien and Sari will never truly leave each other, because those who are destined cannot be ignored.

Favorite of the series
Revisado: 01-22-21
This is the story of Sari and Damien. It takes place over centuries, as they come together and fall apart. I won’t not recommend it without reading the first three books, as I think it would be confusing.
Both characters are strongly written, fierce, but their deep care for each other is fun to watch.
There are a few jarring pronunciation issues, particularly for names. I cringed a few times, but it smoothed out later in the book. Mr. Britton’s reading was solid, and I liked the way he gave each character a different voice. Try a sample, I think readers of the other books will love this one.

Historia
Bono met his wife in high school, Park says. So did Jerry Lee Lewis, Eleanor answers. I’m not kidding, he says. You should be, she says, we’re 16. What about Romeo and Juliet? Shallow, confused, then dead. I love you, Park says. Wherefore art thou, Eleanor answers. I’m not kidding, he says. You should be. Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits - smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love.

Heart-stoppingly beautiful
Revisado: 04-26-20
At turns beautiful, terrifying, deeply sad but hopeful. Eleanor & Park live here through the awkwardness of high school in the late ‘80s. The horror of riding the bus made worse by its matter of fact description. This is not a light weight listen/read. It touches on racism, poverty, abuse and bullying with an unflinching gaze. It’s a love letter to the comics and music of the time and to first love. The narrators perfectly bring the characters alive. Rowell has written a story that haunts me. I hope you love it as well.
