Historia
With accomplished precision and gentle eloquence, Jhumpa Lahiri traces the crosscurrents set in motion when immigrants, expatriates, and their children arrive, quite literally, at a cultural divide. The nine stories in this stunning debut collection unerringly chart the emotional journeys of characters seeking love beyond the barriers of nations and generations.

Utterly useless
Revisado: 03-18-25
I cannot fathom why this recording is not arranged so that each of the short stories is a separate chapter. It is idiotic as well as user unfriendly—for example, the last story begins at the very end of this audiobook’s chapter five, runs for a mere 2:30 minutes before a musical break and the beginning of chapter six. Every one of the audiobooks chapters is a different length, so it isn’t like there was a scheme to make each audiobook chapter a neat unit of one hour. This a Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of short stories, and it is shocking to see it treated so capriciously and illogically. The stories are haunting and beautiful, the reading is very skilled. But this audiobook is unusable.

Historia
Boaz Manor was a finance wunderkind. He started a hedge-fund company in Canada and later burst onto Wall Street with a product that could transform the crypto market. By all accounts, he was incredibly hard-working. Possibly brilliant. And...a shameless con man who ended up wanted in multiple countries. Chasing Boaz Manor explores Boaz’s schemes through the perspective of those he left in his wake.

Excellent writing and storytelling

One of the very best podcasts I have heard. It was possible to follow this complex story because of the pacing and just the right amount of repetition of names and facts.

Historia
In Paris, 1934, Bính has accompanied his employers, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, to the train station for their departure to America. His own destination is unclear: will he go with "the Steins", stay in France, or return to his native Vietnam? Bính has fled his homeland in disgrace, leaving behind his malevolent charlatan of a father and his self-sacrificing mother. For five years, he has been the live-in cook at the famous apartment at 27 rue de Fleurus.

Beautiful novel, poor reading
Revisado: 10-27-20
Since this book has so many French words and phrases, it needs a reader with a working knowledge of French. It was painful hearing this reader struggle with the French as well as the Vietnamese proper names. He’s also British, putting on an American accent. That’s really a crime against this book, which is a brilliant study of how French, Vietnamese, and American English are woven together in this story of an Indochinese cook in Paris in the 1930s.

Really Poor Narration
Revisado: 02-17-20
The narrator has an almost robotic delivery; 3-4 syllable words (like Anchorage, detective, surveillance) sound like a text-to-voice reader, especially when they come at the end of a sentence or phrase, Worst of all are the attempts at male voices when reading quotes from male characters--she just makes them sound stupid by elongating syllables and speaking in the cadence of Deputy Dawg or Patrick Starfish. Really distracting.
