Historia
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

Uneven
Revisado: 05-14-22
Some sections excellent others not so good. Too often characters behave unrealistically or miraculous rescues to enable plot to progress. Unclear how author feels about the characters, given the disparate fates he gives them. It has many aspects of a morality tale, but where moral of the story is there is no moral.
BTW. I loved A Gentleman in Moscow.

Well-written and good plotting with 3 Mysteries to resolve. Maybe a bit too Greek drama-like at the conclusion.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Too much filler
Revisado: 04-10-22
Serial killer in town. Reporter Laura acts a detective. Lots of extraneous material. e.g., her bad Mom. Police and FBI behaviors not realistic; too much manufactured drama and angst. Completely unsatisfactory miraculous ending.
Narrator always breathless with no modulation in tone.

Be concerned
Revisado: 12-27-21
More than anything, this book shows how dangerous and crazy killers can be. Be careful of strangers, especially if you're a woman and be prepared to defend yourself if possible. Douglas' description of his work developing profiling techniques did not really explain how it was done, other than interviewing many convicted serial killers. It would have been helpful to have more of the analytics included. The examples of the actual cases and interviews with the killers were the best parts of the book.

Tired
Revisado: 12-07-21
Keach was ok as Hammer on TV, but he's not a narrator. Zero voice differences between characters. No reason for Hammer to be so unhelpful to police. Hammer's invincibility is silly, and eliminates any suspence. Even tough guys sometimes lose a fight.

When experts arrive to open the safe and examine its contents, they make an astonishing discovery. There, inside, is a handwritten manuscript bearing the signature of John H. Watson, MD. The manuscript contains the story of how Sherlock Holmes and Watson traveled to Minnesota to track a murderous arsonist - known only as the Red Demon - who is threatening both Hill and his Great Northern Railway.
